ESPN and Canadian TV question.
Is there a reason why cable companies or satelite companies in Canada can't add ESPN to there broadcast list?
I would love to have ESPN, so many good sporting events. They have awesome college basket-ball games almost every night or college football. Plus great NBA and baseball games, that we may not get here.
Is there like a law or something so our canadian sport stations don't take a hit. I know ESPN and TSN seem to work the closest by TSN getting lots of ESPN feeds, but its not the same as lots is left out that I'd like to see.

I'm sure its some CRTC thing. Why would you only want to watch basketball and Nascar anyhow?

Yep. Here's the list of what the CRTC allows: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/No...995/PB95-8.HTM
As an FYI- if a Canadian station believes it has American competition; they can move to have a channel removed or prevent its approval. A few years ago MenTV and a few others tried to get Spike approved. Thanks to a few hundred letters that were sent to the CRTC, we managed to keep Spike going.
I think now however TSN and ESPN have such an intertwined relationship that ESPN would never apply to come to Canada even if they were allowed to.

ESPN owns TSN. Why would they want to compete against themselves?

Best Buy owns Future Shop. On a lesser scale, Jack Fraser owns Tip Top. Competition creates business. The only reason I could see ESPN doing this is to take away viewers from the Score or Sportsnet. That way, instead of owning 60% of the market, they'd own 80%.

Are you sure? I thought Bell Globemedia owns TSN. I found a Wikipedia link, as well as this one: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...ts/Television/
Sometimes these ownership things can get complex, so that's why I'm asking.

I think they own it in partnership with bellglobe media. Not exactly sure how it works out.
Oh, here, it's right in the wiki link:
Quote:
Today the majority owner of TSN is CTVglobemedia, which became CTV's parent in early 2001. ESPN retains a minority share, and as part of that restructuring in 2001, got CTV to agree to change the name to ESPN Canada. That change never went through, partly due to the popularity of the TSN brand in Canada but primarily because the CRTC, Canada's broadcasting regulator, refused to allow the name change.
|
So ESPN has a minority share of TSN. I thought they had a bigger investment. My mistake.

if we got ESPN at least we'd occasionally get some saturday morning highlites.
two saturdays ago we had poker, soccer, and some unrememberable crap on SNET and ZERO highlite reels.
brilliant. at least three sports networks and no hockey highlites from the previous night.

If you are expecting hockey higlights from ESPN, you either haven't watched that station much, or you don't know anyone in the US who has it.
The Score usually does fairly well with morning highlight reels.

well i'd have settled for the 14 seconds of NHL highlites that ESPN has as i'd missed all the scores the night before.
and i did used to watch it.
but some highlites is better than none.
and people wonder why i don't even own a tv...

ESPN is probably the most addicting station ever made...those And1 basketball tours get me everytime. Damn they're good.
As for coming to Canada, Shaw tried to get it approved a couple of months ago, but it was shot down by the CRTC...same with HBO and one other unimportant channel I cannot recall.

Good to here thanks for the replies.
whenever I travel to the state, I enjoy there NCAA football and basketball coverage it's quite amazing.
I don't want it here for sports highlights, because I know they don't show much of hockey, but who cares like tonight I wanted to watch some college basketball. Reading about the Clemson-Duke game sounded like it was amazing. The game was on ESPN. What did we have here tonight in Canada with no hockey on, my guess is poker. I didn't even bother to turn the tv on.

I had never heard that there were plans to change TSN's name to ESPN Canada.
I assumed that was the plan back when they changed the logo, converted "Sportsdesk" into "Sportscentre", and launched ESPN Classics-Canada, so I wondered why they didn't go all the way and rename the whole network.
I didn't realize that was something the CRTC even had control over, considering how often other tv and radio stations change their identities.
