Heres the deal. I as well, same problem. It is NOT your ipod most likely. This problem has been happeneing ever since the new itunes was released (7.02? its 7 somewhere), you can tell if its the new one as ipod updates in itunes, as opposed to usin ghte ipod updater. It causes major issues with mounting. I could use mine as a harddrive, windows saw it, but itunes refused. i tried to use the windows harddrive reformat, first using the full one. Told me my Pod was corrupt after, but after restore no luck. tried again with quick format, which didnt remove the ipod OS, therefor making it clean w/o requiring a corrupt restore. other solutions for this problem i have seen suggested on the internet:
if you have removable harddrives change your ipod drive letter to a higher letter (x,y,p, whatever)
reformat through windows
damaged cords can cause this issue
if you can, try to revert to an older itunes and ipod
reinstall itunes
