Default Samardzija picks baseball

This surprises me as he would've easily been a first rounder come April. Good for him if this is his first love.

All things being equal, baseball is the smarter way to go. More money, longer careers, less chance of serious injuries.

I have read that some football guys think that it is a good choice as well as he is a good but not great football player.

Baseball is the smarter way to go for all the reasons Troutman mentions. The money in football is just to "fake" in that the teams can cut you at any time without having to pay you anything they "owe" you.

Guaranteed $10 million, even if he never makes the majors. As it is, his numbers at class-A ball are encouraging. He might succeed where Drew Henson failed.

There is also a lot of talk that he would not have gone first round in the NFL draft - pretty good money for a 5th round choice in baseball - smart choice on his part

Yeah, thats a big chunk of change the Cubs are willing to dole out. Take the money when you can get it. You have to be a hell of a player to get that type of money in football. Even Baseball is no guarantee as contrary to popular belief MLB is the toughest pro game to crack after you get drafted. But that 2.5 million bonus can't ever be taken away, and if he can make it the upside is far greater than Football. For example Tony Gonzalez who's about to set records at the tight end position just got a 5 year deal for 17 million. This is a well established star player betting this money. In baseball a mediocre pitcher makes that in two seasons.

If you are not an early first round NFL pick, baseball is the better pick.

Way more money upfront, guarenteed contract, and as was said, longer career and less injuries.
