Default I heart chain letters

Today, January 12 in the year 2007, I received the classic "Microsoft will pay you $245 to forward this e-mail and $241 for every subsequent person who receives it after that" chain letter.

I haven't had this one in a while and I thought that most people weren't, you know, ######ed, and had long since given up on this crap. Apparently not. Dang. One person sent this thing to like 50 people. I'm no expert on how the internet works, but I'm pretty sure this sort of thing is clogging up the series of tubes.

To everyone out there in internetland please, I beg of you, do not forward chain letters. Ever.

LOL, I just usually reply with a link to Snopes, but ^^^^^ will probably do the trick.

I would, but I have no time.

I am too busy passing on an urgent note to to all my friends about another important issue that I recieved from a concerned stranger. Apparently, Hotmail will no longer be "free" if I don't email each person on my Hotmail and POP 3 account contact list about the pending doom.

I hate to say it, but yeah, kind of.

I just think "come on, snap out of it lady. You are a reasonable person in all other aspects of your life but you think this is actually going to happen"?

This particular chain letter states flat-out that people will make thousands of dollars if they just send it along to 10 other people. Are there people out there waiting for a cheque from Bill Gates? I guess there must be because they keep sending this crap around. It's mind-boggling.

I'd like to find the ******* that invented the electronic chain letter, slowly cut him into 10 pieces while keeping him concious with a combination of uppers and blood transfusions, and then mail the parts to 10 of my friends with the encouragement to cut the piece that he or she receives into 10 pieces and mail them to 10 of thier friends. Hopefully we can keep chopping the idiot up until the pieces are so small that the moron is actually erased from history.

My favourite response is the following...

Badtimes Virus Warning
If you receive an email entitled "Badtimes," delete it immediately.
Do not open it. Apparently this one is pretty nasty. It will not only erase everything on your hard drive, but it will also delete anything on disks within 20 feet of your computer. It demagnetizes the stripes on ALL of your credit cards. It reprograms your ATM access code, screws up the tracking on your VCR and uses subspace field harmonics to scratch any CD's you attempt to play. It will program your phone auto dial to call only 900 numbers.
This virus will mix antifreeze into your fish tank. It will drink all your beer.
(For Gods sake man are you listening?!?!)
It will leave dirty socks on the coffee table when you are expecting company. It will replace your shampoo with Nair and your Nair with Rogaine, all the while dating your current boy/girlfriend behind your back and billing their hotel rendezvous to your Visa card. It will cause you to run with scissors and throw things in a way that is only funny until someone loses an eye. It will rewrite your backup files, changing all your active verbs to passive tense and incorporating indetectable misspellings which grossly change the interpretations of key sentences.
If the "Badtimes" message is opened in a Windows 95/98 environment, it will leave the toilet seat up and leave your hair dryer plugged in dangerously close to a full bathtub. It will not only remove the forbidden tags from your mattresses and pillows, it will also refill your skim milk with whole milk.

**WARN AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN.**
And if you don't send this to 5000 people in 20 seconds you'll fart so hard that your right leg will spasm, shoot straight out in front of you, sending sparks, that will ignite onto the person nearest you.

I find "reply to all" with the link to snopes works better- make sure everybody knows he/she is a dumb-dumb; because you can be sure that person sending it out isn't smart enough to have figured out BCC for a mass ditribution list yet.

My personal favourite is one person who will reply to my snopes link saying "Well, you never know. It doesn't hurt to try."

It's usually at that point that my brain explodes.

As do I... but that usually ends up with them saying "Why do you have to ruin everything, don't you have compassion?". Especially if it's a sad story of some girl dying of cancer. I just blankly stare at them.

Usually when I hand out my e-mail, I also give a warning. I tell them that if I receive a chain e-mail that even a junior high drop out could tell was false, I would block their e-mail and wouldn't correspond with them again. I've done it to about 4 of my friends. Now they have to call.
