OMG WTF BBQ! Wii can get pr0n!
http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dw....2073d3ef.html
Did you KNOW that the Wii can access internet sites? Won't anyone think of the children.
This kind of thing makes me sooo angry.

As a father I find this disgusting. My child will never own one. I can't believe that they are targeting Wii's from these sites?!

There's already wii porn showing the "use" of said remote.
edit: Dear lord are parents dumb. Yes, let's blamb the wii for allowing internet access. Do they not know that it has PARENTAL CONTROL built into it, disallowing any content/internet use. And to think their children are innocent... wake up... they aren't.

Really makes it a double entendre by saying
"Going home to play with my Wii."

What's the parental control like? Without any kind of filter built in, a white-list type setup (where you specify the sites that can be accessed) seems reasonable.

is there not a wii-friendly site index or something like that, say 1000 sites that are checked by some organization like AOL or saudi arabia does?

You control access to channels, and the internet browser is a channel. You can't control specific sites or web content. It's either full access or none.

I understand that its everywhere, and you can have access to this, and of course that parents should monitor and all all the rest of it. But, I still think that a childrens toy and porn are a bad mix. (at least in my household).
This doesn't mean that I'm not laughing at all of the comments on this post though...it just means that little kids don't need to see that, or have any chance to see that when they are playing Mario...

Not arguing with you here. But where is your personal responsibility to keep it away from your kids?

I agree with you that it should be the parent's responsibility to monitor these things, but this is just one more thing that parents need to worry about that they really shouldn't. Nintendo markets itself to kids.
It can't have a positive effect on a child's psyche to have to be monitored constitantly, but things like this are making it very hard for parents to give their children any kind of independence or adult-free time... (Something I believe is very important to developing a child into a responsible adult).

That's a great point. But I have two questions. First, why does it have to be with a game system that the kids can be without adults?
The biggest thing is why does a kid need his Wii to have the internet channel? I just don't like it when people get up in arms when they want the manufacturer to do EVERYTHING for them. Also, I wouldn't say that the Wii is exclusively targetted towards kids. Kids are a big part of their audience, but I'd wager that they're really trying to target the casual gamer who isn't into the hardcore style of games like Gears of War or something.

That describes me alright, and I have also been considering getting a Wii.
It will be my first game console ever; unless you count the Commodore 64 as a game console.

The onus should be on the parents, I completely agree, which is why this would not be given to my kids, or at least not have the internet hooked up.
Kids are curious and should be curious. You want them to explore and learn a lot by exploring, but only when you know exactly what they are getting into.
I'm not a guy who is up on my high horse or a prude and I'm being a complete hypocrite here; porn on the internet is not a problem because you have to make some attempt to seek it out.
For people/companies who run sites to set-up things that are Wii friendly and such though seems to be crossing the line. Nintendo is a kids toy, and while I know that you can't protect kids from everything you have to at least make the attempt.

The Wii is neither a children's toy, nor is it a baby sitter for your kids. It is no more meant exclusively for minors than your television is.
The primary market for the next gen consoles is 18 - 35. Internet access is a natural extension of this philosophy - adults want to surf from everwhere - phones, PDA's, and game consoles. Children don't have $250 to drop. Games for kids are just an additional revenue stream that goes with the goal of putting a console into every living room in the world as an entertainment center.
The argument that the Wii should restrict access to adult content is ludicrous. The Wii wasn't made to raise your kids. Nor was TV. Stop exepcting the free market to protect your children. Parents need to supervise what their children watch and do and stop asking the entertainment community to dumb everything down so it is safe for an 8 year old.
If you aren't going to buy a Wii because it has internet access, then I guess you better toss out your computer and TV as well.
(the whole other can of worms is - how come porn is bad, but violence is ok? As the lesser of 2 evils I would much rather have a child see a naked woman than the Saddam hanging - something shown on many newscasts).
