I went with my cousin and Dad to a cabin near the South Castle River. We brought horses and rode a wagon into camp with all our gear. I went flyfishing in the river, and caught some nice cutthroat trout, the best being a 13.5" female, and a 14" fat male. We caught mostly small cutthroats and a couple of bull trout. A really nice river, but the forest is very thick around, and it would be easy to be suprised by a Grizzly. One fisherman was mauled by a bear near this camp a few years ago.

Got a little lost looking for the trail to Lys Lake, but we now know where to find it. Lots of signs of wildlife around, and saw many mule deer and white-tail deer in camp. I hope I can return to this area next summer.

I had a fairly uneventful, relaxing weekend, which was nice for a change of pace.

Went to Cowboys for the first time ever...been living here since I was 4, never been. It was awesome, did a little line dancing, a lil two stepping, had the bartender ask if he could autograph my boobs. Did I mention everyone's super friendly there? hahah

I've discovered that country music is a sort of guilty pleasure of mine and the friends I usually go out with aren't near redneck enough. I think I'll try Ranchmans and that mechanical bull next...

Went down to Kinbrook Island and did some camping. Thank god we got a group site with a cook shack, because it rained and stormed each night... but it was good times. Played a few rounds of golf around the Brooks area...

I just keep telling myself World Cup in 27 days, World Cup in 27 days, World Cup in 7 days...while rocking back in forth maniacally in my chair...glazed look in my eyes....and if anyone tries to touch or console me I screetch at them "PENALTY!!! INTERFERENCE!"

4 days of wakeboarding/golfing/tubing/heavy drinking on a lake near Kamloops. 30+ every day, and an unlimited supply of liquor whilst floating on a lake. One of my best long weekends I've ever had!

Now if only my brain would de-fog I could get some work done.

I did some backpacking in the Yoho Valley region. Second time, and boy, I would do it another 10 times before I die. Beautiful, beautiful area. Hiked the Icline Trail the first day, stayed at Laughing Falls campground, and then did the Whaleback to Twin Falls and out the second day. Fantastic weekend.

Well, maybe not for my girlfriend. Her first backpacking trip (been on many dayhikes with her, but this was the first overnight), and her new boots tore her up. Some of the biggest blisters I've ever seen. She said they were worn in...

I did take my new bike out for a spin...and by spin I mean I rode it from Sikome to Princess Island Park.

Think I might invest in a gel seat...man was my ass sore this morning.

Went camping up by Waiprous (sp?) for the first time. Definitely a different type of camping than I was used to before.

Too bad the weather was crap on Sunday or it could have been an absolutely awesome weekend. Stupid rain/mist.

Hey, are you...me?

I went backpacking in Banff this past weekend. Started at Spray Lakes in Canmore and hiked up Bryant Creek. Stayed at Br14 the first night...I only brought my sleeping bag liner and a fleece blanket, thinking I wouldn't need my -15 sleeping bag. Man was I wrong. I was freezing all night.

Woke up and hiked over Assiniboine pass into the Assiniboine region. Checked out the lodge and stayed at Og Lake. Cold the second night too.

In the morning, we used up the last of our water and were heading down to Og lake to refill...but it was teeming with this little red squirmy things which we dared not drink. We decided to hike on and refill at the next stream...

...which was 14km away and up about 250m of elevation. My god were we dehydrated. The Valley of the Rocks and Citadel Pass have to be the dryest places in all of the rockies. Citadel Pass, while hard, is beautiful, though. Hiked over that and into Sunshine Meadows, stayed at Howard Douglas Lake, which might be one of the prettiest places I've seen. The bugs were atrocious, however. The best view is hiking out of that little dip where the lake is and looking back on Citadel Pass...absolutely breathtaking. I'll have to get my photos developed and post one on here.

We were supposed to continue on to Egypt Lakes, then Shadow Lakes, then out Redearth Creek (two more nights, 3 more days of hiking) but we reached Sunshine and decided to duck out. With me being cold, a lady friend's feet being pretty much toe-to-heel blisters, and me having to do an essay and a presentation for tomorrow, we called it a weekend.

Cool stuff five-hole. I've been told that the Assiniboine region is pretty much a must-do for any serious backpacker, so it's definitely on my to-do list. My dad and sister did it a few years ago I think, but I couldn't make it. Maybe I'll pm you sometime for some advice on what to do when I decide to do it.

LOL about the girlfriends and their feet. I swear, I must've asked her "are you sure they're worn in?" and "do you need to put on some moleskin" and "do you need to adjust the moleskin?" and "do you need a rest?" about 25 times each, and every time she'd say she was fine. I've had badf blisters hiking before, so I understood that she was probably having a pretty sh*tty time, but at the same time, it kind of sucks to be on a hike with a grumpy girlfriend. Hah.

As for the water thing, my $90 Katadyn filter is one of the best pieces of hiking equipment I've ever purchased. I'd definitely recommend it. Small, easy to use, and after getting pretty sick (not Giardia, but something similar) a couple years ago, I decided to try it. Now I don't drink anything that's not purified when I'm out there, even though I did the opposite for 10 years. You should think about picking one of those up.

We use this liquid purifier stuff called pristine. You take two eyedropper-like containers, mix 4 drops of each per litre, let it sit for five minutes, and then add it to the water. Wait 15 minutes and it's killed a whole range of things (I know it does giardia as well as some other stuff.)

The funny thing is this is the first time this year we didn't bring our actual filter because we hadn't used it every time we did. Heh.

I'd highly recommend the Assiniboine area. It tends to be pretty busy, which is a turn off for a lot of people (myself included), once you get away from the lodge area it's pretty nice. Really varied terrain. And, of course, Mt. Assiniboine is something else.
