Default Surreal footage of Canadians in Afghanistan

Not for the faint of heart. Have to think about these guys and what they're doing, especially at this time of year:

Not sure why you would call it surreal.

Our soldier kick butt like they have always done! Tough job with very little thanks!

Excellent video. It amazes me how these guys have so much bravery and courage to be in a situation like that and perform in such a well constructed professional manner. To cap it off the guy at the end almost casually just has a quick smoke.

Don't tell Jack Layton these guys are acting like actual soldiers over there.

What a job it is to go and fight for your country. These guys are modern day heroes.

You're right, 'surreal' was not a good choice of word.

Its a scary video in a lot of ways for the people who have family members that are over there fighting.

The training has certainly changed from the bad old days when ammunition was valuable and very heavy (The FN rifles that I carried weighed 13 pounds loaded, the rifles they carry now are far lighter, even though I prefer the FN for ease of use and cleaning. but using a high velocity 7.62 round had its advantages like shooting someone throuh a tree or a car, wheras the C7 uses a 5.56 nato round). We were taught to use aimed shots, and the FN's didn't have the full auto capability.

It looked like a typical confused combat situation where you don't really see the enemy, you see the rifle flashes.

They looked professional and they kept thier composure, the soldier at the end having a smoke looked a little shaky.

He looked like he was pretty shaken up to me. I doubt he was just casually relaxing.

Interesting footage though, and it shows how dangerous it is over there.

Not the best choice of words. They are not fighting for OUR country. If you like, you can say they are fighting for democracy - although that is a stretch - but they sure as heck aren't fighting for Canada.

Don't get me wrong. Although I may disagree with the government putting our soldiers in harms way to 'build democracy' in Afghanistan, I support our troops and admire their commitment, sacrifice and bravery.

I guess the troops that gave their lives in WW1 and 2 weren't fighting for Canada either.

They have a patch on their shoulder that shows who they fight for.

Get a clue! The fact that the 2 Great Wars are referred to as WORLD WAR 1 & 2 might give you a hint.

Are you seriously comparing the Afghan conflict and what is at stake there versus WWI and WWII?

Apples and oranges sonny-boy.

It has nothing to do with what is at stake.

WW1 was a useless war...one that didn't have a point. Yet you still think those soldiers were fighting for Canada...yet those if Afghanistan are not fighting for this great country?

Maybe YOU should get a clue.

Those soldiers wear a Canadian flag on their soldier to show that they fight for Canada.

Wow ... that's all I can say is wow. So if WWI didn't have a point (although millions of people would disagree) what is the point of the the war in Afghanistan? Is it to spread democracy, or end terrorism , or is it to prop up the corrupt puppet government and ensure the worlds supply of heroin is secure?

What was the point of WW1?

A war because of an arms race? A war started because of the assassination? Trade barriers? Really, what was the point?

At least with WW2, you had a military machine intent on wiping out a race.

I never said Afghanistan had a point nor did I say it doesn't have a point...but Canada got involved in WW1 because of British influence. Were our soldiers really fighting for Canada?

Or wouldn't you say our soldiers 'always' fight for Canada?

And I'm sure millions of people would agree with me....WW1 should and could have been avoided.

If you believe WWII was fought because the Nazi's were intent on wiping out a race you're even more misinformed than I'd thought.

Keeping in mind that once one side starts invading other countries whether or not a war should or could have been avoided is moot. Should Britain and its Allies just handed Europe over to the Central Powers?

WWI was a war fought for democracy or the principles of democracy versus autocracy - the Allied countries being democracies (except Russia) and the Central Powers being Autocracies.

You'd better hit the history books again young feller.

WW1 was fought for democracy...we can agree on that. And you believe Canadians fought for their country in WW1.

Canada is fighting for a democratic country in Afghanistan..

But our soldiers aren't fighting for their country in Afghanistan? Who the hell are they fighting for?
