The Jackets get even older than we already were, but felt that we needed another top defenceman to help our squad out. Tyutin is a great young player, and Huselius has been having a decent NHL year. Still Huselius was not producing very well for us in the CPHL and we have tried him everywhere to try and get him going. We felt that we had enough guys up front that we could absorb the loss of Huselius to make the upgrade to Rafalski on the backend. We will pay for these moves one day but in the mean time we want to try and make this years squad the best we can, hence why we haven't traded our 2008 first yet. John Tavares may be a Jacket one day.

I've always liked Tyutin as a prospect... but not too keen on his 51 DI in the SIM which I had problems with when he was an Islander.

Yea that's one of the reasons I traded him this past summer. I don't get it either, he's extremely disciplined in real life?

Well this DI rating was discussed at large during the trade talks. Both parties are well aware that it will likely be adjusted come offseason since Tyutin is a defenceman with 20 Pim in 30 games. Thats really a low total given his position and how much ice he does get.
But the DI isn't the reason I traded him, as I think GM's really over rate some of these fine details. He's a good defenceman, but I needed one more horse to put in my top 4 and Rafalski can be that for me. Tyutin thus far is putting up similar numbers to last year and has a negative +/- rating so if he continues to play at this pace his rating won't rise dramatically. Rafalski has put up a fair amount of points but does have a low +/-. But I think New Jersey is a slow starting team and guys like Rafalski and Elias are starting to get it together as the season wears on. By the end of the year I think Rafalski will have good enough numbers to justify his current rating. Huselius has decent numbers, but 18 points in 28 games projects to about 50 points which is okay, but not outstanding, so I can't see his rating moving up more than a point. Wright probably will be forced out of the league....so yeah, I'll feel that one and hate myself for this trade next year LOL. But what the hell it's not next year yet!

^ Yeah his DI adjustment is probably a season late, but that's one of those things that gets missed with 1500+ players to look at every offseason during re-rates.
The problem seems to be that young players automatically get low DI ratings in the SIM and after re-rates, if they did have a good season, the PA, PC and SC ratings are the ones which go up while their DI stays relatively static.

Well I won't get into it....but to adjust every rating does take a lot of time. Young players getting low DI's was a bit of a shortcut and tradeoff for higher overall ratings. Lets face it in hockey today league leaders have 240 Pims a year and very few players get over 100. A far cry from 15 years ago. In general our Sim hands out more penalties than real life, even more than the new NHL where sometimes you get 2 minutes for breathing on guys. The SIM also averages 6.5 goals a game scored whereas the NHL averages about 5.5. So mirroring real life isn't exactly possible with the SIM.
Ratings are always a bit of a touchy subject, but I do think this league is moving in the right direction and given a bit more time will have them as close to right as you can be. Like anything though it takes time.

From the Wild's perspective these two deals go hand in hand. Acquiring Dan McGillis who always seems to excel in Wild silks, allows us to play him in our 2nd pairing, and then use Tyutin sparingly even strength, and on the PP to mitigate his DI problems. Without being able to get McGillis I would not have taken on Tyutin because of his DI rating. The Wild are also one of the lowest penalized teams in the league so I can afford to have one goon out there and not have it kill me.
From the league's perspective, one of our major goals next off-season will be to ensure that the individual attributes of the players as much as possible accurately reflect the NHL version of that player, including correcting the low DI ratings that some players unjustifiably had. But as Syl says, its a TON of work and some will always slip through the cracks.
