Kind of tough to defend against too, they come from all over the word to spam. Someone obviously pays them to register and spam as many forums as they can.

Another forum I mod (~similar size to CP), was getting tons of these. Best defense we found was to enable a 1hr delay from registration, to being able to post.

No reason why the Buy and Sell forum can't have the same thread creation restrictions as the main forum.

Anyone who signs up just to sell stuff is likely a spammer.

Heh, actually I've seen them wait. They'll register an ID, complete the registration, then come back a few days later and THEN post the spam.

Agreed, though 25 posts is a lot in case a regular lurker does want to register just to sell would want to do so. And setting it up for a different amount is not nearly as easy as one might expect (glares at vBulletin's permission code).

In reality we get more messages from people who don't understand the minimum post count stuff than we get spam messages, so from a minimum work point of view it's easier just to ban the spammers.

I have however started banning entire subnets from Africa.
