Default The Red Mile (crime)

This isn't a big deal, but I just wanted to get this off my chest. Why is 17th ave. sw, reffered to as 'the red mile' whenever the media is reporting crime on the strip?

I'm posting this after seeing yet another example of this on the news tonight. They were reporting the shooting of a bouncer on 17th. Now my beef is the fact that I hear them refer to it as 17th ave all the time, but as soon as it is a crime they are reporting, they all of a sudden go out of their way to refer to it as 'the red mile', sometimes even going as far as to call it the 'infamous red mile'. What the hell is the point of this.? Sure the red mile had some minor problems, but overall I thought it was viewed as a pride mark for our city. I mean just look what happened in Edmonton by the second round of their playoff run.

I know this isn't really a thought provoking thread or anything, but I just really wanted to vent my frustration over this.

I heard a radio report the other day, and it was either 660 or 770, and they were referring to 17th as the "red mile." Now, apparently they always do, but as I don't listen to those stations, I found it really weird they refer to it as the red mile also...

Guess it just seems like a playoff thing to me...

I think the term "red mile" has come to be associated with a lot of the negetive aspects of 17th ave. Therefore, maybe the media uses that term when they're talking negative and 17th when they're takling positive.
It's stupid, but it's the media...

What happend with this bouncer? Where was he working?
