My favorite restaurant in Edmonton is Coliseum Steak and Pizza. Not a fancy date type of restaurant, but it offers my favorite steak in town. The other bad thing for you, is it's on the opposite end of the city at 118 ave and 80 st I believe.
Picco Lino's is on 142 St and 91 Ave, and is relatively close to the mall. I haven't been there, but my parents have, and it is highly recommended from others as well. Again, it's not a fancy date type restaurant, but from what I've heard the food and service is second to none.

I can recommend nice romantic restraunts to go to that are cheap.
That's Amore! is a restraunt kind of on the way up. Not close to any malls though.
The Caperie (sp?) is downtown and not close to any malls, but probably my favourite. Very traditional and nice romantic setting.
West Edmonton Mall... crap. You won't find anything there that's good.

in collingwood there's a DEADLY italian restaurant called sorentino's. i believe they branched out to calgary in 2003 but i haven't checked out that location.
i think they're on 150th street or so, just south of the whitemud. whatever major artery next east of 170th crosses whitemud, cannot recall.
they have a stone pizza oven and a varied menu, awesome atmosphere, the owner hangs around, great everything. basically it's what earls claims to be in their commercials.
also zambellini's on yellowhead or stony trail, just north of the mall. amazing prime rib.
damn - edmonton sure has calgary's number when it comes to restaurants, it pains me to say...

As mentioned Sorrentino's is a great restaurant (date type for sure).
Also the following could be tried:
- Dante's
- Chianti's
- Lazia'a

There's a Chanti's everywhere, tons in Calgary.
RE: Sorientino's. This is just my opinion, but I find That's Amore! to be just as good as Sorientino's at half the price and double the amount. Sorientino's is fancier, though.
There's a awsome little Greek Restraunt downtown too, can't remember the name, but a simple goggle search can get it for you. It's a cheezy name, but a family restraunt.

Spago on Yellowhead and 97 street is my favourite restaurant in the city. Portuguese food.
Sicilian Pasta Kitchen at Jasper Ave and 112 street.
Phanuthier: Are you referring to Yanni's on Whyte?
Also, if you want something more upscale (but still affordable), Gini's on 149 street and 107 ave.

Nope, this little family run greek restraunt downtown by one of the LRT stops. It had some sort of "Intro to Greek food" name to it.

Although Calgary may have "weaker" restraunt selection, calgary has one restraunt that no one else in the world has... Sandro's Restraunt and Pizzeria. AKA the best resteraunt EVER in the history of FOOD.
Plain as that.

my fav greek restaurant was "it's all greek to me". It was awesome. High in portions, I think the items were around 18-25 bucks.
It's address is: 10127-100a street (downtown i believe)
A date took me there once and I liked it a lot. The food is awesome!!
