Default Job search in Calgary

Looking for job search tips for the Calgary area. My wife and I are moving from TX to CGY, finally see some real hocky fans... however, my wife has a job lined up, actually she is being transfered. I don't really need to work but would be nice, also to get to know the community.

After searching monster, working, careers clicks, they are too serious of jobs, and I'm semi-retired and calgary job shop I keep getting spam from them. Does anyone have any other jobsites to recommend?

I just found albertacareers.com, will give them a try and maybe jobs.ca. Anyways, just checking, looking for some local advice and thanks in advance.

TX - CGY

Actually, all you have to do is stand on a major intersection with a sign saying "Semi-retired: looking for part time job" and about 300 companies will trip over eachother to hire you.

Basically, figure out what you want to do, then search out companies that match that. Chances are good they are looking for people.

Welcome to the best City in the whole FATAing world so long as you arent poor.

Depending on your skill set I would recearch a few companies then call their respective HR deparments or work at WalMart as a greeter for 20$/hour

Also buy a touque - cause its cold as hell up here right now

What kind of a job are you looking for? Professional? Trade? Service?

Yeah, not too sure about Home Depot, or the street corner thing, but thanks for the thought.

Maybe become a fishing guide or do something in the mountains, I hear Banff is nice and it's only a short drive or the Stampede in the summer. I'm not too sure if I'll work in the winter, bbbrrrr, maybe just hibernate.

Here is a good one:

The two work sites that I always used were http://www.monster.ca/ and http://www.workopolis.com/ (the company I work for uses Workopolis).

You could always be a ski patrol in the winter and a golf course marshal in the winter. I think that the deal for Heritage point is that if you work one shift you get one free round of golf ($135 value) that can either be used by you or transferred (ie. Sold) to someone else.

My sister is moving back up here with her husband from Texas as well. You'll like it here if you can stand a cold winter. It's not really that cold here, but compared to anywhere in Texas it is.

As for picking up jobs, you can walk into any place retail and find a job. At the least it would be a good filler job until you get to know the city and area better to see if a fishing guide or hiking guide? can make money (I don't fish, so I have no idea, and I hike by looking at a map in the info station and going and seeing if I can find the trail). Do you know what part of the city you're moving into? A lot of times places don't bother to post onto jobsites now because the response is so low either way and they always have more jobs then takers. Finding a place near where you're going to live and either dropping by when you get up here, or calling ahead would be a good idea.

You'll find when you get here that almost any place you can think of is hiring ... like a previous poster said, figure out what areas you'd be interested in and you'll probably have a job there within days.

Good luck with the move!

I have no idea if any are looking right now but car dealerships often use semi-retired folks to drive their courtesy shuttles.

Just an idea.

Or how about school bus driver. Southland definately needs people immediately.

I'm in Auckland, New Zealand, and job searching here is ridiculously hard.

Believe me when I say, Calgary is a Mecca for jobs.

In this city basically anyone can get a decent job. I actually know several "semi-retired" people that have found great jobs and currently enjoy working, but with a lot less stress that your job can bring... Go to any company you're interested in, literally, they'll probably hire you if you know you're stuff (relateing to the job).

On another note, you should stay in Texas for a little while longer. Enjoy the sunshine!

Are you Canadians returning to Canada or Americans being forecefully transplanted? If it's the latter, and your wife is a professional or executive of some sort, make sure you get your work permit situation straightened out when you first enter Canada. It's easier, in my opinion, to do that when you first enter...

What do you enjoy doing? You could probably get a job anywhere you like if your skills fit the bill even moderately. The fact you are obviously fluent in english is a huge plus.

If you are semi-crazy and want to drive around in the winter, you could probably make a killing as a cab driver right now.
