From the desk of GM Noops
Managements philosophy has always been to build a team that will win it all next year. With that said we wanted to attain players that were just getting into their prime playing years as opposed to accumulating youth or vets with declining production. As such there has been a massive overhaul of the team through the first quarter of the season concluded with the latest addition of star center Pavol Demitra.
We view our latest trade of Demitra against the move of Olli as such:
Just to recap:
Deal 1: Olli Jokinen for Brendan Morrow + Shea Weber + Paul Gaustad
Deal 2: Shawn Horcoff + Keith Ballard + Duncan Keith + J. Abdelkader for Pavol Demitra + Mikko Koivu
Olli Jokinen < Pavol Demitra (Pavol is an all around better offensive player)
Shawn Horcoff = Brendan Morrow (Horcoff better short term, Morrow better long term.
We agree with Becky that Morrow is big time
underrated here in the CPHL)
Keith Ballard < Shea Weber (Weber has much better upside)
Duncan Keith = Mikko Koivu (toss up)
J. Abdelkader < Paul Gaustad (Gaustad is already starting to shine in the NHL and has
a very affordable contract)
We think these moves were beneficial for us in the short term and in the long run. The teams depth chart now is as follows:
Morrow - Demitra Recchi
Erat - Nylander Blake
Chistov - McCauley Pominville
Brule - Koivu Gaustad
Ward Talbot Dimaio
Visnovsky Kuba
Corvo Suter
Rozsival Weber
Raycroft
Cechmanek
Compared to our roster from the end of last season (see below), Management feels that they have been successful in the redevelopment of the team, but now need the on ice product to start performing.
2005-06 Final Depth Chart:
Stefan - Umberger - Fehr
Getzlaf Beech - Shvidki
Pettinger Brule - Tapper
Simon Ward - Wanvig
Dagenais Whitfield - Brown
Erskine Salvador
Montador Orpik
Corvo - Weber
Gleason Jones
Denis
Bryzgalov
We think we have some excellent talent, but more so on D. With guys like Weber and Suter in the mix, the Flyers defence looks like it will be amazing for years to come. And with all of our Dmen performing extremely well in the NHL, decent upgrades in OV could be given over the summer.
GP G A PT +/- Rank amongst DMen in NHL Scoring
Visnovsky 26 7 11 18 -2 6th
Kuba 24 3 13 16 +8 11th
Corvo 19 2 12 14 -4 19th
Weber 22 4 9 13 +6 23rd
Suter 22 4 7 11 +5 36th
Roszival 24 2 8 10 +7 43rd
We feel our team has a good mix of veterans and youth that will move the Flyers into the upper echelon of teams within the not so distant future.
