Default AVG Anti-Virus (edition) to be discontinued

After a hot ip from somebody on this board a good 3 or 4 (maybe even more) years ago, it seems AVG Anti-Virus will no longer be made available for free. I got a pop-up this morning when I booted up saying it will stop running January 1st, and if I want to continue with it, I need to shell out $29.99 US.

Anyone know of any other virus software options that are safe, legal, and free? Or am I going to have to finally start paying for virus protection (not whining, but after a good chunk of time with a fantastic, free protection program, it's going to suck to have to pay for one)?

That sucks...AVG was one of the best free virus scanners.

Avast.

Not sure what's going on with AVG. I keep reading stuff that says it's still going to be free; they've just buried the link somewhere deep in the annals of their website.

Not surprising. Microsoft is putting these companies in a very difficult position with Vista.

I was building a computer for a friend of a friend and went to download AVG a couple of weeks ago. No freebie to download anymore.

I would rather use nothing. I tried it out for a week or so and it slowed down my system to a crawl, maybe it's better now who knows?

I spoke to about 5 or 6 Shaw techs who said, stay away from it.

I still use Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy (although it is rare that they catch much).
I also use this, a -squared.

You can still get 7.5 for free, you just have to search for where it is.

I'm using clamwin on my laptop right now though.

I think it's just AVG version 7.1 that's ending, and being replaced by (the still free) version 7.5. According to this link anyway:

That's like taking penicillin in case you've caught an STD. There's still a lot of stuff a shot won't cure. You really should get some protection.

From the "News" section of that link:

LOL. Watch out for Zone-Alarm - it has hosed a bunch of systems (Not as bad as Norton, but getting there)

Whats wrong with Norton? I downloaded it from google and I havn't been that impressed with it, but it hasn't caused any problems (so far, which is why I'm asking).

It has gotten a reputation for missing viruses, as well as it's processes noticeably slow down some older computers.

The Internet Suite is the worst, and has screwed up many systems to the point that they needed to be wiped clean.

There are many other better solutions availble. None are 100%, but many are better than Norton who has rested on their laurels for quite a while.

The only times my computer has ever messed up so badly that I have had to format it all happened right after I installed Norton. I tried it off and on for years and it continuously caused me nothing but problems. I refuse to ever let norton be installed on my computer ever again.

if you have a router, there is no reason to use a software firewall like zone alarm (unless you want to allow only certain programs internet access, in which case the built-in Windows firewall is a better option as it is less likely to cause issues). a router is a hardware firewall and will do a better job of protecting you from outside attacks than any piece of software could, as any outside connection won't even be able to see your computer, just the router
