Default Getting Out Of A Cell Phone Contract

I have been with Bell for quite a while. I just decided to add my wife on a family plan, so I renewed a 3 year contract and bought an expensive Samsung a900 phone. Some might say, 3 years is a long time, I figured, I have never changed providers (I am have been quite happy with them) so why not. Most of the providers are very close to the same price.

Anywho, I just got a new job, and to my surprise they are giving me a cell phone.

I just called to see how much it would cost to get out of my contract, and it is $400!

What can I do about my contract (my wife will remain with Bell) and what can I do with my phone I bought?

The phone I got for my company is cheap phone. Can I unlock my phone to use on the Telus network or something?

Thanks for any help.

You can probably transfer ownership of the phone and contract into someone else's name... with their permission first, of course.

As for using it on Telus, that's a no go.

400? thats insane!!

i had a friend once who lied and said he was moving to a foreign country (i think he picked a random one in africa) and they let him get out of the early termination fee because he couldnt help but cancel the phone service.

400?

How much time do you have with your contract?

Normally the amortized price of the phone over 36 months is charged along with 10/month for the remaining months.

Get someone to call them and say you're dead.

Well, at Telus we require a death certificate. They likely would too.

Wasn't that an episode of Seinfeld?

Or on second thought, maybe Telus should make that their slogan.

I would double check that.. I thought with Bell it's only $200. If you are on a corporate contracts its only $50

I work for Bell, and they recently changed the cancellation fees, so it would surprise me if is $400.

Firefly is right the best option is a TOR (Transfer of Reasonability).

That's interesting ... I have a Fido phone myself that I don't use at all with about 9 months left on the contract ... I thought it would be a lot more than ~$100 to cancel it ... might have to give them a phone call.

I believe the cancellation fee is $20 / month or tops out at $400.

Anyone want a Samsung a900 phone for FREE*

Private message me if you are interested.

* Please note that you must assume a 33 month contract. This hot deal also includes no activation fee. You do not have to assume my phone number or plan. This can be changed upon the transfer.

Subscribe to a free evenings plan, place a call at evening cutoff + 1 minute and have it last until morning cutoff - 1 minute. Repeat until they kick you off.*

* This is a semi-joke, I have no idea if this actually works, it may violate some contract and make them charge you huge $. But if you make it so they don't want you...
