The LD card you used- did it have you dial a 1-800 number first?

I beleive Telus has a unlimted long distance plan for cell phones, after 6:00.
If your girl is in Edmonton, you should convince her to get Shaw Digital Phone, then she can call you, and no problem.

Not sure what rate you get on your cards but another option is yak.
My gf lives in Van and I use it to call her from my cell. It's 3 cents a minute and they bill your credit card for the minutes you use only.
That way you don't have to worry about using more then your plan provides or less and still paying for the whole thing.

yakcell.ca
I signed up for it.
3.5 cents/minute to anywhere in Canada/US.
only thing is, each minute you call counts as a local minute. So if you've got unlimited local minutes, you're ok. My plan is unlimited local calling after 6, so that's when i use yakcell.ca (you just dial a local number, then the long distance number)

yup like people have suggested here, either get a calling card with a local number or a toll free #.
Then, watch your local minutes! You can call/receive during your local minutes billing time, but you are using local minutes up, so if you go over....
but if you get a calling card, and then call when its "free" (i.e. usually after 6 - 8 pm), then you are fine. well you will still use up/eat away at the calling card, but not be almost double-billed if you will.
Cheers.

Your rate plan covers the LD if it's a Canada One Rate... you just need to increase the size of it. How many total minutes did you use? I bet if you said you were going to cancel over it, they'd magically find an unlimited LD evenings and weekends plan...

Skype is the way to go, it's free long distance calling over your computer. So all you need a headset with a mic and you're good to go.

No. 1800 numbers are by definition, "toll" free... toll being LD. Therefore, you should not be charged LD on a toll free number.
However, just to clarify, a toll free number IS a long distance number, but someone else pays the long distance. The reason I bring it up is that if you have unlimited LOCAL evenings and weekends, a toll free number would not be part of that, as it's not technically a local call. It would then therefore comeout of your daytime minutes, if dialed on a cell phone.

Because of the new LD costs such as yak for your cell (which I use). One rates for all cell phone providers are crap. If you have Rogers phone call in and complain - if you have a local plan you can get 100 LD mins for $0! lol Anyway - I'm all about the save your money.....!

In theory, you are using up local minutes while you are using the card. If you went over your 250, then you are paying.
That 250 anywhere in Canada is good if you are a business man or something, or you travel a lot.
I'm with Fido (Rogers owns them). I get fido to fido calling anywhere in Canada at anytime as part of my regular package.
If people are looking for a family plan, just go to Fido. Screw the family plan. Your calls will always be unlimited to eachother. I get great service everywhere.
My evenings also start at 5pm.

I just got my new cell phone bill today too. While we are talking about rates and stuff, I am wondering if it is possible to find out what you were doing on the 1X browser. My bill seems stupidly high considering I was hardly on the internet through my phone. I got one time where I got charged 65 bucks for 6 minutes of 1X browser use. Would complaining to Bell help? Also, I recommend Yak as well.

I could of increased to the 800 minute package (I think I used 700+ minutes) but it would be upwards of a 100 bucks IIRC. With her moving back near me between semesters and stuff about 6 months a year I won't be needing that much minutes most of the time so I think just getting LD cards would be the best.
I was using the PC ld card but my gf found another one that had something like 800 mintutes for 20 bucks.

Then if you're using a LD card, get off your LD plan cause you'll need the local minutes.

They should know where you went... we know at Telus... You can even find out at mytelusmobility.com if you've registered your account there... you go into usage summary, data summary, and then click on the specific date you want to look at... It'll bring up all the sites you hit.
