That sucks. I hate it when pet owners are unresponsible. The owners should get chared with assualt for that.

Don't beat the dog--he was just being a dog. The culprit here is the owner, who is at all times responsible for his dog's actions. If your dog is aggressive, you should take the bull by the horns and address that behaviour--and you should never take your dog off leash in unpredictable environments, or in situations where you may not be able to control them.
Some people don't take the responsibility of dog ownership seriously enough. I'm sorry that happened to you and good luck with seeking restitution.

Thanks for the replies. She couldn't get the dog off our puppy. It had our puppy by the neck and then the back so if I was there I would have gone nuts on the thing since the owners were far behind and it was out for blood.

That's crap. I hope the owners were good enough to pay the vet bills and apologize at least. Somehow I have a feeling they wouldn't have though.

What did the owner do about the attack, did they try and help or anything?

This falls directly on the shoulders of the owners. They should have trained their dogs better than that. That being said, I am all for off-leash parks for dogs and owners. If the dog is well trained and well behaved, then all parks can be off-leash.

Sorry to hear that man. I live in McKenzie Towne as well and I always see unleashed dogs running around the ponds.
What did the owners do? How have they handled it so far?

certain breeds are illegal in certain places - which, while i don't agree with it, does reduce dog attacks.

Well the dog wasn't with the owner. There were 2 women out walking the dogs who are friends of the owner. They had them off leash and were quite a ways behind the dogs. From what I understand they apologized, gave their name and phone #, said they would pay for vet bills and one of the women walked with my fiance for a bit because she was absolutely beside herself to make sure she was okay and could walk the rest of the way home. And she kept saying that what happened was very bad and that they shouldn't have been off leash.

I had an offleash dog try to jump in my car once. It was pretty funny. The dog crashed into the side of my car and then ran around going nuts.
The owner tried to acuse me of driving unsafely and left a letter in my friends mailbox asking me to apologize (this happened infront of his house).
She said she had my plate number and would report me if I didn't apologize.
I showed up at her door and while she was expecting an apology I completly told her off for being an unresponsible dog owner. She was shocked and didn't know what to say other then call me a little smart ass. She even had her little kid come up to the door and say he heard me squeeling my tires around the corner. It was comical.
Then she told me I should come back and talk to her husband because I had completly put her in her place.
To this day, I still get bad looks if I drive down that road by all the neighbours who hear the incorrent version of the story.

I was attacked by an off leash dog when I was younger, and no one helped me, although several people came around later to say they had seen it happen. (Buggers.) The dog was put down because there had been a number of complaints about that dog and the owner.

Yeah, that sucks when another dog is off leash and attacks your dog. It happened to me about 15 years ago in Kamloops when my dog was bit by an off leash dog. Nothing irritates me more than people who have a dog off leash, but don't have control of the animal.
I hope your dog and fiancee are alright.

It is the owner's fault, but if it were my dog I would have sh** kicked that attacking dog too.

Yep, I have two beautiful Olde English Bulldogges, which are the real version of English Bulldogs before they ruined the breed, but whatever, these used to be fighting dogs, and bull-baiters, but are SO NICE. Anyways, they are SO good, but the little dogs can snap at them and that makes their 'switch' go and I'm telling ya, you HAVE to be in control of these dogs. They are basically a very large pit-bull (type) that aren't pit bulls, if anyone that knows the bully breads can relate to.. Anyways, we had to stop taking them to off-leash areas because other dogs weren't properly controlled. Ironically enough, it's the poodles and other little dogs that attack really bad. Rootweilers, Am-Staffs, Shephards, Labs, Mastiffs, Bull Mastiffs, etc - no prob.

Im a dog lover..soon to be a vet tech..and working in a doggy daycare....and I can tell you that its the ultimate responsibility of the OWNERS to ensure proper behaviour of the dogs.
Adult dogs have the same mental capacity as a 2 year old child. Would we get really upset at a 2 year old for doing something incorrectly? No. And we shouldnt get upset at dogs if they get out of control, because it is the responsibility of dog owners. Dogs have LOTS of energy and they need to be exercised regularly, and if they dont get their playtime or exercise and arent kept busy, they will be "bad". So if you cant take responsibility of your dog, then you shouldnt have one anyways.
Dog lovin Oiler fan....(hehe you shouldve seen my old yellow lab in his oilers scarf..you guys wouldve HATED it..haha).

The difference is that a german sheperd can put an awful lot more of a licking on .. well .. anything .. than a 2 year old can. If I were in that situation, my thoughts and efforts would be concentrated on protecting my family, not worrying about the poor dog who couldn't be held responsible. Just my POV though.
