Sun NewsPapers: Harper Tories conservative in name only
Is this a case of some on the right being unhappy with the leaders of the right? Or is it just a bad commentary? Or...? Etc etc....
http://edmontonsun.com/Comment/Comme...1/3796815.html
If Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's budget numbers are to be believed, Canada will come dangerously close to going into deficit in each of the next two years.
...
Either scenario suggests how far Harper's "Conservatism" has drifted away from "conservatism" -- meaning a genuine belief in smaller government, lower taxes and prudent management of the public purse.
What we're getting instead is either reckless overspending or more of the same fiscal smoke and mirrors we used to get from the Liberals.
Either way, it means that in the next election, there will be no truly "conservative" party on the ballot. Just in case you thought we had one.

The left is attacking them for too large of a surplus, and the right is saying they're spending too much. In other news, the sun will rise tomorrow for the first time since this morning.

I think that the reason why this is not such a conservative budget is due to the fact that it is a minority gov't. If the Conservatives had a majority I'd be willing to wager the budget would be a lot more conservative.

The same could be said about GWB in the U.S. He is only partly conservative (mostly in the social sense). His foreign policy is anything but "conservative" in the classical sense.
That's the thing about neo-conservatism. It has actually adopted a lot of aspects from pre-1960s liberalism. It's funny how a lot of Conservatives haven't realized that.

I agree. As soon as he gets a majority, look out for those tanks on the streets.

I have a curiousity question: would this thread have gotten more responses if we substituted out Conservative and put in Liberal (and made it look like the liberals were different from what they state they are)?

Canada is not a Right leaning country, its a left. To win power you have to lean to the left of your value set.
The Conservative Party of Canada is likely now a centre party where everyhone else is left of centre.
Newsflash to Conservative supporters, if there were no NDP, the Liberals would cakewalk through every election. If it takes a fw enviro/child care nuggets to win, so be it.

The Sun taking a very right-wing stance on an issue?
Utterly shocking.

Ha, no not so shocking. Interesting that they are already biting at Harper's heels, however.
