Default Winnipeg - Too Young Offenders

Sorry I can't find a link for this.

I was at the gym this morning and caught the tail end of a story on Global from the Peg.

It was something about 3-5 youths, ages 8-11 locked a disabled (cant remember the exact disability) kid in a shed and lit it on fire. Some girls saved the kid and the cops said that since the Young Offenders Act is ages 12-X they cant do anything.

They will be offering counseling but its not mandatory.

It was one of the few news stories I have ever heard that made me phyiscally sick to my stomach.

Does anyone have a link, a quick google/ask search didnt turn up anything.

Thanks

MYK

Anyone see the movie Radio???

Sounds very similar to a scene in that movie, when Cuba gets locked in the shed at the football shed by the team.

This is just sick

I honestly don't know what I'd do to my kid if he did something like that. He'd be missing a few teeth, thats for sure.

I heard about it a few days ago but didnt know the kid had Spina Bifida which is what I have until yesterday when my sister mentioned it. I had to put up with kids teasing me growing up but never had anything even close to that happen. It's sad that some kids and even some adults dont realize that although we walk different people with disabilities are no different than them.

Geez, what's with you CP guys?

"Some guy tortured a dog. Poor animal, that's cruel. Let's kill him!"
"Some kids locked a handicapped kid in a shed and lit it on fire! That's insane, no kid deserves that treatment. Hope the parents beat up those idiot kids!"

...really, the paraphrasing says it all. Hypocrites.

Well, the kids do deserve some punishment. Their parents may or may not do this. What I get out of this story is that the state is powerless because the kids are under 12 and the kids know this. When they become 12 and older they are still under the juvenial act and that is pretty much toothless also and kids know this too. We're not doing these kids any favours by teaching them that their bad acts have no consequences.

This is why the government has to change the damn young offender act. It is a freaking joke. You cannot tell me that because the kids were under 12 that they did not think they could kill or at least hurt this kid by setting the building on fire.

Sympathy for innocent animal, tortured for some sicko's pleasure? Check.
Sympathy for what's coming to some kids after they tried to kill someone? Nope, sorry.

Should they be criminally responsible at such a young age? I don't think so. They sure knew what they were doing, but I doubt that they fully understood the consequences of their actions. That doesn't excuse what they did, but I don't think they should be held accountable in the same way that a young offender would.

I do think that it makes sense for Child Services (or whatever it's called) to deal with the parents and make sure everything is OK, and check up on the kids over the next few years, but I think that the parents are probably in the best situation to deal with something like this. We can't slap a criminal label on them at 8 years old - I think it could be potentially more harmful in the long run.

I'm pretty sure that at the age of 10 I knew that if I locked a disabled kid in a shed and lit it on fire that he would burn to death.

Um...you're implying that you're against crulety towards the handicapped kid; then in the same breath, speaking for cruelty by saying you'd smack your kid's teeth out if they did that.

But hey...if that's what parenting is like down in Ontario, who am I to judge?

What would you do? What if your handicapped kid was locked in the shed and lit on fire? You'd want blood..

Then you'd want more blood when you saw belfour der on TV saying the kids didn;t know what they were doing, and were unaware of the situation when they put the kid in the shed, locked him/her in, and lit it up.

Haha, thats hilarious! Ya you know SO much about me.

If my kid locked a handicapped kid in a shed and lit said shed on fire, he would get his ass kicked. Yes. I am obviously a child beater/abuser.

Maybe I should give him a "stern, politically-correct talking to"? Its worked so well in the past....

no no no... you have to put him in the naughty chair and tell him he been bad. Give him some cookies when he sits there for 5 minutes thinking about what he's done, then take him to a baseball game.

Um, how about taking him to a psychiatrist to be analyzed? Putting him in a correctional school for a few years? That sort of thing?

Timeouts aren't enough by far, but child-beating goes over the edge. At least in this day and age, IMO.
