I went last year and finished second in the Puerto Rico tournament. Got bounced in El Grande in the first round.

Would like to go this year, but probably can't make it. Would like to enter the Formula De tournament.

Any other boardgame geeks here? What are your favorites?

Here is a group that gets together in Calgary:

I've never heard of these games, or most of the ones you have in your list. Are these Dungeons & Dragons type games?

Good Lord Troutman, that is a boat load of games,

Here is my condensed list

Die Macher - just ordered from valleygames.ca - will likely not play it until I go back to Edmonton since most of the people I associate down here arent board game people.
Settlers - all expansions except Sea Farers
Memoir44 - all expansions
Axis and Allies - All versions, expansions
Stock Ticker
Shogun - v1986
Ticket 2 Ride - all 3 versions

Comapred to Troutman i am an inphant board game owner - geesh.

How do you like Carcassonne? I have never heard of it before. Jenga

If you are in Calgary or Okotoks visit Sentry Box or Valley Games respectively, Puerto Rico I hear is fun (not D&D) never seen El Grande but I know its not a D&D type - there are a few on his list I am unfamiliar with but none of them seem like D&D type.

The top rated games by boardgame enthusiasts:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser...k=117&pageID=1

Good gateway games include Settlers of Catan, Ticket To Ride and Carcassonne.

These games are much more compelling than the old favorites like Monopoly and Risk.

A trend in the industry is the "euro-game". Strategic games with a theme, little to no luck, nice components, and can be played in about 60 minutes.

http://www.thegamesjournal.com/articles/Essence.shtml

The Essence of Euro-style Games

So what makes a Euro game Euro?
  1. Rarely take more than an hour to play.
  2. Simple rules.
  3. Only a few plausible or reasonable choices each turn.
  4. Uncertainty of information.
  5. No player elimination.
  6. Very pacific.
  7. Player interaction without overt conflict.
  8. Short intervals between playing ("down time").
  9. There are not many pieces—cards, counters, etc.—for a player to manipulate in a given turn.
  10. Great visual interest.
  11. Abstract to the point that the "theme" appears to be tacked on.
  12. A dislike of dice.
  13. Positive scoring mechanisms.

I have a friend who loves play Axis & Allies, but it takes so darn long we rarely play since we never get finished.

I've never played the original, but my wife and I are big fans of Carcassone: Hunters and Gatherers. We also have Settlers of Catan with a few expansions, and Attica, which we don't really play that often. Puerto Rico will likely be the next one that we get. Of the games at the convention, one that I've really enjoyed is robo-rally; the idea behind the gameplay is a lot of fun, but apparently it's out of production.

I like Carcassonne, its easy to play and there are some good basic strategies you can use... though a little simple if you like more 'epic' boardgames like A&A.

Yes, setting up the board even when you're so good you know all the starting positions is still a 10-15 minute task. I've found often we don't play it just because the setup/takedown time is miserable, not to mention it takes us a good 10-12 hours to 'finish' the game (though I'm not sure we ever really do finish it, one side generally gives up first).

No, D&D is a 'role-playing' game that can take hours/days/years. These are all 'board games', usually played out in one sitting... and usually involving a board or playing surface... of some kind.

Puerto Rico rules, one of the most re-playable games out there IMO.

Carcassonne is a great game. Much deeper than you might think, and the game can be very cut-throat. Some people complain about randomness (drawing tiles), but I don't think this is a vaild concern. Good players will always win, and know what to do with a bad draw.

BTW, I saw the real Carcassonne this summer in France:
