NHL 2007 shootout demo
The NHL 07 demo is on Xbox Live right now..it's just a shootout but it's pretty fun to see the Oilers beaten again and again.

Simply amazing. Just played a few shootouts. The goalies are nothing like their old counterparts in NHL 06.
The game looks stunning on an HDTV.

Something I found very weird about the demo. The first time I played Smyth scored exactly the same way every time. The next time I played he was stopped exactly the same way every time. Other than that I like what I see so far. I'm still getting used to the controls but one thing I like is when you deke you dont get that arcadey feel like you can deke back and forth 10 times in two seconds.

Good. It was one thing I was worried about when watching the videos. Some insane deke moves back and forth back and forth that just couldn't happen. Glad they either fixed it or played with the diffculty setting a bit more.
Now my questions is this: Are the rules of the shootout followed? By this I mean does the puck always have to be moving forward? In some the videos I saw spinoramas, players cutting back etc... All things you shouldn't be able to do.

*Edit*
Rules are set to off by default so when you first play you can spin backwards but when you go into options and set rules to on you cant spin backwards.

Exactly what I wanted to hear. I don't like it when the obvious rules are missed. reminds of some of the poor attempts at hockey sim that had no idea what an offside was etc.

well there were exceptions to the rule of the puck moving forward last season, the best example being Malkin's between-the-legs game winner. if they were to stick to the rules then his goal shouldn't have counted, which would have been really stupid. they talked about changing that rule to making it so the player has to be in a constant forward motion, not the puck. hopefully that goes through and the games take advantage, as i'd love to pull some sick moves in a shootout

Malik's goal wasn't illegal. the motion of the puck did not go backwards, Malik stopped the puck, the puck is stationary but his body is moving forward which gives off the illusion that he pulled it back.

I believe you are right...though I was pretty sure you also couldn't stop it.
But if you aren't I remember distincitly that week that goal was scored Kelly Hrudey saying it shouldn't have counted and reading the rule on air during Hockey Night in Canada.
It isn't surprising that if it occured it was missed but yes indeed it shouldn't have counted. Some calls get made in real life others do not. Refs make mistakes...especially in game winning goals. Ask the Sabres.
Rule 30: Penalty Shots
The Referee shall ask to have announced over the public address system the name of the player designated by him or selected by the Team entitled to take the shot (as appropriate). He shall then place the puck on the center face-off spot and the player taking the shot will, on the instruction of the Referee, play the puck from there and shall attempt to score on the goalkeeper. The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent's goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal), and any time the puck crosses the goal line, the shot shall be considered complete.

I played this for way too long last night. Its pretty fun! A few things are a little annoying though.
The post gets hit way too much
Its tough to take a wrist shot to the corner thats across your body (i.e. top right corner for a left handed shot) without it switching to the backhand.
Slapshots are a bit akward, but I think they just take some getting used to.

I put in over 3 hours with the demo last night, had 2 controllers going so I could keep shooting. It's tougher to score, that's for sure but it's still new to us. I have a feeling that this game is going to be a lot of fun. I can't f'ing wait.

I think the camera angle for shootout's makes it tough to tell which side of the stick the puck is on when you're taking wrist shots.
Still good times, 2k7's demo is out now too. Gameplay is an improvment but their new Cinemotion/musical score is a joke.

Really? I found it easier to score. I only had one move that I could ever score with on breakaways in the earlier games. I didn't know you could play two player though, I'll have to check that out! I tried out the manual goalie control which was kind of fun, although much harder than before I thought.

I find wrist shots don't work nearly enough on the shootout. I switched to the high camera and it made it a bit easier, but still hard to see. I'm sure there will be more cameras when they release.

The camera angle was bugging me. I hope that the Low Medium High settings are very different for the actual game, I hate being that close.
I was scoring on maybe 3 out of 10 shots. Just need more practice I guess.

The actual game gamera angles are essentially the same as prior versions. It's not that close in.
