Default Best way to sell a used car (with serious problems)?

My wife's car has a serious problem with it. It is a '97 Cavlier, and it has an engine problem (bottom end knock). It still drives, but, mechanics at a GM dealership say its only a matter of time before it goes.

What do some of you suggest would be the best way to get the most money for it?

I think we might try an auction, but are there any other suggestions?

For something like that, I'd say an auction is your best bet. Thats how I sold my old Ranger and it was quick and painless. Didn't get much for it, but wasn't expecting much either, so it all worked out.

If you're in Calgary, go to www.jspeed.ca sign up, and sell it there. You won't get much, but it'll be gone. The guys are willing (and eager) to put a better enigne in Cavaliers.

Check out the Canadian Black Book website:
http://www.canadianblackbook.com/prv...=AB04DC39ZKL01

Last car auction I went to, many of the car buyers were basing their bids on black book value. Probably a good indicator on what you could expect to receive. Incidentally, I once owned a Pontiac Grand Prix with what sounds like the same problem (bent rod causing bottom end noise... same advice, sell it now.)

I ended up selling it to a used car dealer, for a price in the black book range. I got three different prices from different lots, about $500 difference from top to bottom. No one ever asked me anything about the mechanical condition. The mileage and body condition seemed to be the only criteria.

Suffice it to say, I'll never buy a used car again without an inspection.

Thanks for the tips guys. I ended up taking it to an auciton. I'll see what it goes for today. The guy said generally Cavaliers and Sunfires go like hotcakes. So I put it in the mid-range of the black book value.

Poor fool who buys it ..... once again, I guess the point of the thread is "never buy a used car again without an inspection".

I will trade you straight across for my 86 Ford truck.
Great gas mileage (a 300 six),runs smooth,always starts,
new this and that, the radio quit working however, but it is a truck.
Tell me when your coming so I can warm it up because it might blow a lot of smoke.Rings I think. Don't worry easy to fix.

"Poor fool who buys it." You bought it and you are asking us how to rip off the next buyer.
Interesting thread but I hope it ends here.

Kidney foundation or parts, live with it.

I understood that it's valves that cause the smoke on a cold start.
