Richards has gone downhill…
I brought this up in another thread and got a few responses so I thought it might warrant its own thread…
After listening to Mike Richards pretty much since he came too Calgary I have found lately that he was seriously gone downhill, he started out really well and worked really hard to win us over and did with his hilarious fake interviews and pretty funny takes, but now that he has it just seems like he isn’t trying anymore, always resetting the same old takes over and over, seems like every other day I hear that stupid Doug Fultie song and when he does come up with something new, i.e. that chuck wagon song he plays it so much that after listening to one full show the song has gotten old and annoying, I know its slow and I know there is a lot of charity stuff he has got to attend, and perhaps its because I am not a CFL fan at all, but if he doesn’t get some new stuff soon I will be switching to CBC full time.
Oh and another thing, Jenna Holbrook is just awful IMO. Maybe she did it in for the guy but I really don’t like her, she hasn’t proved to me that she knows more about sports than the average Joe on the street, and if you are going to be on a sports radio station talking about sports your really should have extended knowledge. All she does is make stupid little comments on the morning show, and when she does host coffee Rowe all she does is take calls!! That is just lazy anyone could sit in front of a mike and take calls all day, and the worst part is she can’t even communicate with her callers because they are more knowledgeable than her!! And the worst part is she gets talked up as being hot, when she isn’t at all!!!
Anyways end rant…thoughts?

I like listening to Richards on my way to work in the morning. I usually get a laugh out of the Enrique Iglesias bits, and his Danny Maciocia bit that paralleled Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters had me in tears. I usually only get about 20 minutes a day, but he's generally amusing to me.
Heh... the Danny Maciocia one.. http://www.fan960.com/mp3s/mikericha...uly25%2006.mp3

I like Richards, think he's a pretty funny guy, one thing to remember is it's the summer and holiday time, which is not a big ratings period anyway, things will get ramped up in September when the fall bbm book approaches. I like Jenna, she has talent and remember that she is quite young and on a all sports station where the listener demographic is 99% male. She has got a tough gig where everything she says will be under the microscope, and as for the "hot" thing, theatre of the mind is what radio is all about.

I hardly listen to the FAN during the painful off season, come training camp I will be tuning in again. And yes Jenna is a bit of dullard.
Nothing better than Richards roasting the Oilers and all of Edmonton, ahh good times.

I know what you mean about the material being a bit bland lately.
However, his work during the playoffs was masterful. Loved the laugh track whenever the Oilers lost a game, etc. I can listen to that over and over and it is still funny.
As far as I am concerned this is his offseason too. Give the guy a break, he really hits his stride come hockey season.

I don't have a problem with Richards or Jenna - in fact, I'd prefer her over D'ohboy on the Big Show - I hate it when Bruce goes on his rants about the new CBA - every time they even mention the cap he talks about his PA agenda, and it ****es me off.
I love the Maccochia bit that Richards did, I was crying I was laughing so hard!

Well I hope your right, I do miss Maher in the morning but I just hope his popularity hasn’t gotten to his head and he doesn’t work anymore (Errr Jerry Forbes)

Careful J Pold. You will replace "Dr. Hockey" as Mike's new whipping boy on the air.

I have to agree with the Flutie stuff, he plays it a lot and it isn't funny at all. It does seem like he hasn't had a ton of new content as well, a lot of recycled bits...
But, I think its just a bit of a down cycle in the summer. The Edmonton stuff was absolutely awsome, and I love that laugh track. It should pick back up in Hockey season.

I like the Miikka bits as well as the Steve Armitage "THANKS MIKE" stuff.. It's slow for sports if you don't care about the CFL.

Some of Mike's greatest hits:

I always enjoy Tom Hicks, Danny Maciocia, Vijay, Charlton Heston, Jeff Garcia, Steve Armitage, Mikka, Rod White.
He can't be funny 100% of the time, but we are fortunate to have this talent in our market.

I'm a big fan of the David Lee Roth & Jack Nicklaus interviews.
Not a fan of the lady at all and no, it's not because of gender.
It's the mistakes and rants that get on my nerves. Sounds like a know it all most of the time.
I thought Ken Ussleman was much better even though he barely got to speak.
Rick Lafitte is getting really good at setting Richards up for jokes.
He's like the Andy Richter circa 1999 of Calgary AM radio.

I still get a kick out of the show. Sure beats anything else on the Radio right now.
I always love his Stompin Tom Morrisette song.

His tribute to Ziggy Palfy's retirement was pretty good. Don't listen to him that much tho.

It's not saved on the Hot Audio anymore, but I used to love the fake Jim Rome interview with fake Sidney Crosby. "Uh, I'd rather not say." It always made me laugh.

The best part of Steve Armitage is always "THANKS MARK" ... it gets me every time. I'm a big fan, as I've said before, of Dutchy and Don, and yes, Dino Cicarelli's Dad is awesome.
Sounds like I've not been missing much the past month but I sure have enjoyed the opportunity to listen to Rome on a close to daily basis.
