Default Mac vs PC

Alright, I am buying a new notebook in the next couple days, and have narrowed the decision to either the Dell Latitude D620 or the Macbook with Dual core 2.0 ghz processor.

Both are close in price, and I know you can run Win XP on Macs now too - so I'm just curious to see what the posters here have to say that may sway me to one or the other.

I'm going to be doing some photo-editing, internet browsing, work, email, etc... no games, that's what my desktop is for... so, which would you go with, and why?

Mac:

Dell:
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/prod...DT1&l=en&s=bsd

Also, is it worth buying the 3 year Mac Warranty? It's $300 compared to Dell which includes 3 years in the price already.

I have been running a mac for about 5 years now, I love it. Just recently putchased a MacBook Pro. I ran Windows on it for a bit then took it off. Photoshop hasn't came out with a version that will run on the new macs, YET. But from what I have been hearing it could be ready late 2006 or early 2007.

For me personally I would never go back to PC I love the OSX enviroment and if I need to I can duo boot. With talks of virtulisation(SP) with the new edition of OSX, running windows programs will be even better as you wouldn't have to shut down then start up.

this is what macs are made for. Get the Mac you don't have to worry about trojans/viruses/spyware and you don't have to deal with the hellhole that is known as dell support. Also get the applecare plan. It is worth every penny you spend on it. They will pretty much replace anything that goes wrong in it.

Is it worth upgrading the memory to 1GB as well?

funny, cause there is no computer company i hate more than Dell! Apple's best selling feature is quality. Dell's is price. I guess it depends what's more important....and I dont mean that in a derogatory way, those two factors are important to different consumers.

absolutely. my one peeve with Apple is that they dont come with enough standard ram. You definitely need the 1GB.

If I were getting a laptop right now I'd get a Mac. The extra $$ for the warranty is kind of lame though, but probably worth it if you plan on having the laptop for a long time.

And like greerb said, there's stuff coming to make it even easier to run Windows apps when needed.

I'm thinking of buying one of them macbooks but someone told me they get really hot -- like uncomfortably hot if you actually use it on your lap. I don't want to look like I wet my pants due to sweatyballs after I use this thing so if anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

I can't decide about black and white either. The white looks cool buy I'm afeared that my sanitary habits will render it a filthy grey boogerholder.

Apple doesn't call them Laptops anymore the refer them as Portable Computers. In all fairness mine does get hot but not too noticable, being an aluminum case do dicipate heat and all it is rather cool. Not to sure about the MacBooks though my G3 got warm as well, as does any Laptop.

Anyways this is enough to drive me away from pacing any laptop on my lap.

This is terribly unhelpful, but personally I would never be caught dead with either Apple or Dell in my bag.

Build your own laptop from a barebones kit.

Yeah, that is terribly unhelpful. Some people don't have the time or desire to learn how to do such a thing.

Yeah those commercials are terrible. I didn't know jeams + ratty hoodie = hip.

I think I've seen the square/pc guy on the Daily Show (playing a square) and he was pretty funny. Has anyone else seen that?

Anybody who is down on Macs clearly hasn't used one lately. I'm a UNIX/BSD geek, and I live in both Windows and Mac worlds and have for the past 5 years. I also happen to own a new 15" Macbook Pro that recently replace my 12" Powerbook.

The heat thing is WAY overblown.

My Macbook Pro rules. Parallels is awesome and Windows runs very nicely inside it. The integration is really impressive.

I can tell you this about my Macs: They don't crash, they don't get viruses, and they just work. You plug stuff in and they work. They just work.

Think about it: Apple creates the hardware and the operating system. That makes it WAY easier for them to support you if you have an issue. With Microsoft they are always blaming Dell and Dell blames Microsoft. Gong show.

Who should not own a Mac? People who are REALLY into 3D gaming because they titles aren't there. The big ones are available, but nowhere near the selection on the Windows platform.

Spend 1 week with a Mac and you will not go back.

I think you'll find that Dell charges lots of money for an extended warranty as well...

1GB should be considered the minimum amount of RAM. 512MB will have you swapping with more that 4-5 apps open and would blow with Photoshop or something intensive.

True, though the Dell he's looking at already comes with a 3 year warranty.

Still, I wish I could justify getting a Mac laptop
