Default JJ Abrams to Save Star Trek?

Yeah okay, I loved the Next Generation, lets get that out of the way.

http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2006-07-21/#3

Quote:
Mission: Impossible III director JJ Abrams has confirmed he's set to save the Star Trek franchise after signing on to produce the next film in the sci-fi series. The 40-year-old Lost and Alias creator, who is a longtime fan of the cult TV show and subsequent movies, is considering directing the new Trek movie too. In an exclusive interview with America's TV Guide magazine, Abrams says, "It's sort of surreal but wonderful. I'm producing and may direct. I have every DVD of every Star Trek episode from every series. I haven't seen every episode from every series but I certainly know it well enough to be working on the movie." Abrams, who will team up with fellow Star Trek buff and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof on the new project, initially fumed when his involvement in the new film was announced before he'd committed to it. He admits he took his time to sign up for the project: "There have been 10 films and all these different (TV) series, so it was a question of finding out what they (movie executives at Paramount) were anticipating." Abrams insists the cult following Lost has found will help him make decisions about where to take the secret storyline for the latest Star Trek film. He explains, "Fans of Lost don't compare to fans of Star Trek, but working on Lost gives us a view into how important it is to respect the fans."
Abrams sure is taking on alot of projects lately.

This is a good move for Paramount.

I think Abrams is great... he seems to have a lot of talent.

That being said, I don't think Star Trek needs "saving". If they make another good TV show, the people will watch it. If they make another good movie, people will watch it.

As an aside... the story going around the Star Trek world is that this new movie will revisit Kirk and Spock (who will both be re-cast) just after they graduate from Starfleet Academy. Another rumor is that Abrams wants to get Matt Damon to play Kirk.

The only way I would ever watch Star Trek is if JJ convinces Jennifer Garner to appear in it. And even that is a stretch.

Nerd fest needs to go away.

If you don't like it don't watch it. Not only that but don't even comment on it... your comments are useless and offensive.

I would just like to see something other than Berman's version of what Star Trek should be. Voyager was getting good towards the end, but there were just too many things about Enterprise that bugged me.

I think it needs a fresh perspective to be able to go forward.

Please just let it die, and bury it for 10 years.

Star Trek TNG - was just too cute, and group huggy for me, and you saw a sink in every cabin, and Troy had a bathtub, but no toilet. There was wall to wall carpeting on the bridge, and outside of the borg (which they completely wrecked) there was no menacing enemies, except for the transgendered chick who nailed Riker. They could defeat any enemy with technobabble. What I'd like to see.

Riker - "Captain, if we do a inverse Tachyon beam while venting warp plasma through the feldercarb regulators, we might be able to disrupt thier secondary statis field and be able to make them decloak"

Picard - "Great idea Will. Mr Laforge, make it happen"

Laforge - "What in frick are you talking about. Hello advanced engineering degree in warp theory, and non of that stuff exists"

Picard - "D'oh"

Ship explodes end of series.

Star Trek DS9 - I liked it, it was gritty, and dark and all of the hero's are flawed. But the main villains were shapeshifters. I mean thats kind of the unbeatable deux ex machina.

Worf - "There dosen't seem to be any sign of shapeshifters in your cabin captain"

Sisko - "Yeah except that I don't remember having any couches like that. Or a Louis IV chair, or a 8 foot dildo."

Worf - "Open fire"

Star Trek Voyager was complete garbage, you could hear mastabatory sighs when they added 7 of 9 when the ratings were crap from all of the trek nerds out there. Too much technobable and they made the borg into egomaniacal villians with a high level of incompetance.

Borg Queen - "Resistance is futile, we will add your uniqness to us. Your race will service us"

Janeway - "Reverse the polarizes and send a negative Ion pulse through the main deflector array"

Borg Queen - "Gah....?"

Janeway - "Who's the pwetty Borg Queen?"

Star Trek Enterprise - Never has a series used time travel to such levels of craptitude. And why in the frick didn't the Klingons just destroy the earth, I mean we had one ship, and it was like 500 light years from home. Besides that Captain Archer seemed to be really in love with his dog. And again we heard Trekkies sign whenever ratings were down as they had to run through the decontamination chamber in thier federation issued under roo's. And this time they had more guys in thier underwear then girls.

Archer - "Wow I didn't realize how boring space really was. Lets go kill something, so I can act all tough guy"

T-Pol - "Just let me change into another really clingy catsuit that gives me a federation regulation wedgie"

Archer - "Hail them so we can have an obviously hilarious mis understanding because they're speaking a language that we've never heard of before and we don't have the Deux ex Machina translater"

TPol - "I just blew the backside out of my skin tight pants, join me in decomm captain"

Can't we just all agree that both Star Trek and Star Wars suck in a galactic way?

I'd prefer to see Joss Whedon get a kick at the franchise.

I'd say bring Firefly back, but, well... "I am a leaf on the wind, watch me soar"

DS9 = dark sci-fi done well

TOS = amazing and groundbreaking

The rest = total crap.

Abrams sounds like a Trekkie. To save Trek he just has to order hits on all the stupid producers like Rick Berman and writers like Brannon Braga. They ruined Star Trek if anything.

I've heard that Matt Damon would play Kirk.
I think JJ would bring back some respectability to it.
And no Kybosh it's you that sucks.

Love TNG.

I disagree with the group hug comment. I always found TNG to be a kind of show that takes on todays faults in society and deals with them in ways that we should be dealing with them.

Well, maybe not the episode where Worf kills Duras. But I think I'd have killed him too.

Picard is the man. Yeah yeah, it's just a tv show... But the writing for Picard was so good, so often. Could you imagine him as US prez?

The only episodes that I really didn't care for were ones that focussed on Troi. She was pretty... Pretty annoying.

As for the technobabble... Well, I'm just a geek at heart. I loved it.

I once googled the star trek galaxy (or something to that effect), and stared at that map for a good half hour. It had everything on it... Romulan space, the neutral zone, UFP, Klingon empire, cardassia, betazed...

I think I'll go look for that map again.

Federation Catsuits are ridiculous and make their attresses look silly and gross.

The ones in uniform were always much better Troi didn't look respectable until she changed to a regular blue and black in the 6th season. It's stupid when the extras and female security guards look better than the main stars.

Voyager and Enterprise should have just stuck 7 of 9 and T'Pol in regular uniforms like Dax and Ensign Ro.

OMG, can I turn off the [nerd] please. agggggggggggghhh. This stupid thread has resurrected what has lain dormant since the last century.
