I rode a Kona Jake until yesterday when I was hit by a drunk driver. After the insurance claim I will either get a Kona Jake the Snake or a Specialized Tricross Comp.

Of course, those are cyclocross bikes so it's probably not what you're looking for.

gee, which one?

06 Santa Cruz Blur LT, great mountain bike
00 Rocky Mountain Hammer - mtn bike converted to commuter, fully rigid
98 Lemond Chambery - my road bike, carbon fibre rules, baby!

What to recommend? What kinds of stuff do you usually ride? Do you race? Downhill, freeride? Tough to say without knowing all of the information.

03 Rocky Mountain Hammer. The one thing I really like about Rocky Mountain Is that they are made in Canada.

99 Cannondale F700. One from the glory years of Cannondale with victorious World Cup Teams before their ill fated venture into motorcycles.

Unfortunately a bad knee now limits to mild XC riding. Damn ligaments....

Mostly Trail riding and street. Looking for a hard back style with shocks up-front. I currently have a 00 Raleigh Serengeti. I have it narrowed down to one of Kona , Santa Cruz or Kuwahara. Any knowledge on these brands?

Kona has a few that might suit your tastes. A Caldera, Cinder Cone or Fire Mountain would probably work just fine. Kuwaharas tend to be on the cheap side. Santa Cruz only have 2 hard tail bikes, and I don't think either of them would be what you're looking for (not to mention they're probably a lot pricier).

How much are you looking to spend?

Wouldnt want to go much higher than $500.00. The Fire Mountain Kona definitely intrigues me. I didnt know that about Kuwahara, they used to be very good bikes.

for your hard earned dollar, the Kona is 100 times better value than any Kuwahara. The Fire Mountain has disc brakes to boot.

Thread Drift.

http://www.konaworld.com/bikes/2k7/index.html

The new Kona 2007 line is there.

Man does that King Zing look like a beaut. Haven't seen a sweeter (non-colnago) road bike in a while.

I will probably be getting a Major Jake now with the insurance claim.

I'm on a Klein Palamino XX - sweet, but probably not what you are looking for. I'd probably go with the Kona as well for what you're using it for and price range wise. Alternatively, you could probably pick up something used a little upscale from places like pinkbike's forum, bow cycle's forum, etc.

I ride some bike I bought from Canadian Tire. It is a CCM, but I can't remember the name of it... a trailblazer maybe? It was the top bike at Canadian Tire at the time and I had a coupon for $100 off, plus I used my staff discount and canadian tire money so I got a good deal. I wound up paying $150 for a bike that was $350 or more.

I'm not a serious biker so I didn't need something fancy. I used to bike in the coulees of Lethbridge when I was in jr.high and high school though. Back then I rode a Nishiki Barbarian.

Norco VPS Team DH. Similar to this one http://www.norco.com/bikes/2004bikes/vpsteamdh.htm but with a few mods to it.

Norco makes a VERY durable bike. I've rode Marin's, Rocky's, Kona's and Norco's, and have been pretty pleased with the amount of abuse my Norco will take without major problems.

My advice would be to find out what type of riding you'll be doing, and buy bike based on that. Riding DH on a full rigid won't be too much fun, and trying to pedal a 40lb monster on the city pathways might be a little more effort than you want to put in.

Habernac: How do you like your Blur? What kind of riding are you using it for? I'm looking at picking one up pretty quick....

I like the Blur. I'm more of an XC/All Mountain guy, this bike is the perfect blend for me. I can pedal it up and it has enough suspension that it can handle some more technical stuff. I actually did the Whistler Bike park on it last month, got lots of comments from the DH/Freeride crowd (hey Mr Cross Country!) They were pretty impressed I think to see this fool on a 5 inch suspension bike riding A-line (now I want to get a bigger bike to ride that kind of stuff. The bigger hits really beat the crap out of me).

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the low bottom bracket. Rode some trails in Pemberton and bounced my pedals off the rocks a few times. The trails out there are absolutely awesome. Gotta go back some time for sure.

Yeah, my DH is a bit of a slug out in K-country, which is why I was looking for something in the 5" rear travel range, that didn't weight the same as a small car. I've heard the Blur has really good geometry on it as well, which reduces pedal bob and allows for a little more travel in the rear.

You'll have a blast going from something like that to a full DH bike though. I have a buddy whose progresssion skyrocketed after dumping his blizzard in favour of a Kona Stab (8" rear 10" front). He was used to having to land absolutely perfectly to avoid getting a seat post up the arse, and with a longer travel bike the big drops were that much easier.

You should check out COP if you get into the freeriding, they have 2 full time builders that have done an amazing job this year with the park. It's not as long as Whistler, but it's still pretty technical and fun to ride.
