Radio show: Who wants to go to edmonton?
Greetings all,
Did anybody happen to hear a radio show today where the DJ's were trying to give away a fake trip to Edmonton, all expenses paid. Apparently they called all across Canada and multiple people refused on account of it being Edmonton. I've heard it from 2 seperate people today, but never heard it myself. Anybody else hear it?

Well, duh. Who wants to get on a plane and fly to Edmonton? Flying sucks and then you get to a city that's probably not much different than the one you left. I'd rather save my time.

I wouldn't mind checking out Edmonton. I have never been and would like to see more of Canada. It can't honestly be as bad as people on this site make it out to be. Right?

Heh.
That is what I thought. I went for my first time last year on Canada Day (Whyte Ave)... It was pretty lifeless, except for gangbanger wannabees and drunken teenagers.
Downtown was also dead. Barely any activity. And the mall was not all that great either.

My wife went to U of A for 4 years. The university is interesting (then again I've never been to a campus so big). Lets see. It has West Edmonton Mall. There is lots of trees. I dunno, I don't think it is as big a dive as the folks here make it out to be, but to me it is just. Meh. If it weren't for my wife's friends (from school) or my cousins, we'd probably never go there again.

City hall spent about $30,000 hiring actors from the Washington, D.C.-area to run around the U.S. capital on Canada Day handing out yo-yos promoting Edmonton.
|
LOL!
Like there aren't enough Yo-Yos in Washington to begin with!!

Well, this is a Flames message board, so you can't really expect an objective opinion
For the record, I live in Edmonton by choice, and it's a nice city. It's no Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto, but falls in the middle of the pack with other Canadian cities to visit.
If you're planning to make an Albertan trip, you should go Edmonton to see the mall (Alberta's number 1 tourist attraction), head down to Calgary (downtown, Zoo), and complete it at Banff and the rocky mountains.

My grandparents have lived in Edmonton my entire life, i've been there at least 100 times. I hate it, speaking as a Calgarian. It sucks, it's ugly, there is little desirable about the city itself, and it's surroundings. I hate the 70's feel of the town itself, it has just an odd feeling to the town... Too many bogs, swamps, oil refineries, ect.
I wouldn't live there if I were going to be paid double salary... honest to god.
I personally prefer the coast to even Calgary, and could see myself living in the lower mainland of B.C. so it isn't just based on my hatred for the Oilers. In fact the only thing I admire about Edmonton is it's hockey history.

Is West Ed really the #1 tourist attraction? If so, what are the criteria. I can't imagine more people go there than the Rockies, unless 'tourism' includes people driving in from Whitecourt, Lloydminister, and the like to buy some new shoes.

Edmonton is actually a pretty nice city despite what some people here would have you believe. A trip there is a fine idea...I go a couple times a year (mostly to watch BOA games in football or hockey) but I always enjoy it.

In fairness, if someone called me up and said I'd won a free trip for something I'd never entered or had no prior connection with . . . . . I'd probably hang up on them too.
No matter the destination.
In fact, most likely I would never have picked up the phone in the first place due to call display screening.
I won the Flames season ticket holder draw to LA a few years ago . . . . it took about five minutes for them to convince me it was legit.

Don't they have a tiny one in their downtown that's used pretty much only for charters?

The stole Leduc's and try pass it off as their own.
StoneCole, are you serious?? Calgary>Lethbridge>Edmonton. The place is a serious dump and only two things get me up there: Watching the Flames, and the waterslides at West Ed.

Edmonton is a bigger version of Lethbridge, except the ratio of seedy people goes up in Edmonton.

I just checked my voicemail and apparently I won a $2000 trip to the Caribbean and to claim my prize I only have to push '0'!!!!
And yesterday the phone was ringing just as I was getting in the door and it was a voicemail saying I could have a $1000 security system installed for free if I put the alarm company sign on my front lawn!
