Default Bell Globemedia makes offer for Chum

link

Quote:
CHUM's TV stations include:
  • Citytv outlets in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
  • A-Channel stations in Barrie, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Wingham, Victoria/Vancouver.
  • CKX Television in Brandon.

Bell Globemedia's holdings include the 21-station CTV television network, 17 specialty television channels, the Globe and Mail newspaper, and several digital TV channels and internet websites.
It isn't a done deal, but CHUM has endorsed the deal and it is a friendly takeover, so I'm guessing it will go through.

I wonder what this will mean for CFCN & CITY?

I would imagine that there will be a media corporation that will come forward and purchase the A Channel and City TV Stations that exist in cities where CTV has stations. I'm sure it will be a CRTC condition.

City-tv staff are being let go across the country as per radio station reports across the country. Local News is to be replaced by magazine type shows.

Apparently one company cannot have 2 news shows in the same market so CFCN (CTV) news will push CKAL (CITY) news off the air.

Reports also speak of a re-vamped morning show. Not sure if Dave Kelly and his crew will still have a job.

CanWest's debt was recently downgraded to one step above junk grade. They're not exactly in fighting shape.

I miss the days of independant stations...

I have been atching Dave, Jeff and Tara for a long while to get my morning news. I also like City's news much more than CTV. Hope they work things out and find a place in Calgary for the BT cast to reunite.

Not sure how reliable this is but

Is it just me or is the entire world becoming one big company...

bring back a channel and 2&7!

This probably means the end of muchmusic as well, bell global owns MTV canada, and i wouldnt be surprised if they merged into MTV and VH1.

It doesn't look like MM and other specialty stations are part of the deal. It would be a sad day in Canada TV if MM ever was axed.

The deal is for all of CHUM, which includes Much, Space, and Bravo.

Much is pretty well established, where MTV Canada is on its second incarnation in less than 5 years.

I'm sure CTV will keep Much around in some form, they kept TSN around even though they changed its entire on-screen presence to look and sound nearly identical to ESPN. Because of its CRTC mandate, it has to show more music programming than MTV in the US.

It'll be interesting to see if the CRTC allows CTV to keep its CITY stations, or if they'll force them to be sold off. I wonder if there's anyone who would be willing to buy them. The only name I can think of is Rogers, which is really the only major media company without much of a local tv presence. I guess Corus would be a possibility too.

Well, CTV doesn't have a second sister network like CanWest Global does in CH. But they've got City and A Channel to deal with but the only overlap is in Toronto/Barrie and Vancouver/Victoria.

Other media companies who could buy up parts of CHUM would be Quebecor who own the Toronto1 tv station or Alliance Atlantic that own a number of specialty channels like HGTV and Food Network.

It looks like Breakfast Television is staying put-even growing to four hours. The evening news has been completely axed for local programming, whatever that is.

On a related note, I spotted Aisling Slattery at the O&Y party last night at Fort Calgary. She's as attractive in person as she is on the news.

Isn't it true that CITY-TV - aka A Channel - scarcely registered in ratings in any time period in Calgary?

That sounds a little odd to me. I was watching CityTV Winnipeg (Because Calgary isn't on when I wake up) and they were saying that the move would mean changes to their breakfast TV- extending it to 3 hours from 2. I can't see CKY in Winnipeg giving up their news.

Approximately 35 reporters, news anchors and production staff at Calgary's Citytv were laid off suddenly Wednesday when Bell Globemedia announced it intends to buy Citytv's parent company CHUM for $1.7 billion.

Cut immediately from the Calgary station (Ch. 5, 8) are the local 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, while the fate of some other shows still hang in the air.
Breakfast Television, which airs weekday mornings from 6 to 9 a.m., is one of the few locally produced broadcasts that has been retained.

Popular faces who were laid off include anchor Ted Henley and sportscaster Rob Gibson. Popular faces who will remain include Breakfast Television's Dave Kelly and Henley's co-anchor Suzanne Fox.
Big changes. City goes for a different demographic, so it looks like they are going to try and salvage that market.

The Globe & Mail is reporting this morning - sorry no link - that the sale is the result of "family tensions" among the two brothers and one sister of the late Allan Waters, former founder of CHUM.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../Business/home

Popular faces who were laid off include anchor Ted Henley . . .

Considering their ratings, its debateable as to whether the word "popular" should be attached to them.

Henley was emceeing proceedings at the all-night Cancer Relay For Life in late May.

Not surprisingly, that's all the conversation has been about around my station the last 24 hours. All the jokes and concerns have been flown about. BTW, my station(team1040) isa CHUM station along with our 2 sister stations here in Van.

This is unrelated but it's a good article about two Alberta guys that started with one radio station in Fort McMurray and just sold their lot for close to 55 Million to Rogers And Pattison.

It's just the way it is these days I guess.

I haven't seen the numbers lately, but that's about it. CFCN and Global gobble up most of the viewers for Calgary's local news programs. CITY-TV and CBC don't make much of a dent. CITY-TV (formerly A Channel) always seemed to lack credibility in the eyes of most viewers.
