Over the last few weeks (mostly sporadically at nights) there was this thing where webpages wouldn't open the entire way, you basically had to sit there mashing the refresh button before you got a lucky signal, and it actually opened the page 100%.

Its been happening with a lot more frequency lately, and over the past 3 days its been happening all the time.

I know its not my computer because its doing the exact same thing with my roomates computer and I have heard some of my friends have this problem...

So anyone know wtf is up?

Jim Shaw, the President of Shaw, is the biggest ***hole. I don't support Shaw just for that reason.

Shaw is a clear and present danger to my internet browsing. I say we invade

Is it happening with every site?

I would switch to Telus. Telus doesn't give a damn whether you go over your monthly limit or not. I have gone over a few times and haven't even gotten a warning from them. Shaw on the other hand, monitors the bandwidth usuage very closely.

Huh, never had that problem and I'm on Shaw.. what sites does it happen on?

That sounds like one image or piece of a page that is on a different server that is unresponsive (like ad banners sometimes).

Telus has far worse service than Shaw does IMO and Shaw would have to be pretty bad to convince me to cut my internet speed in half by joining Telus.

EDIT: For their bandwidth, if you stay under 30GB / month with their regular service they won't bother you. 50GB / month on I-Extreme.

I've been having a similar problem the last few days.

The internet will suddenly go down and I can't access a site like Google, however I can (slowly) access certain IRC channels.

Sometimes resetting my computer will do the trick other times not.

I assumed it was my router.

On Thursday it went down at least 20 times during the day.

When I get my own place I'll probably migrate to Telus, from what I understand you can download as much as you want...

Shaw threatened me when I had only 24GB at the end of one month. This was 2 months before school ended though, so the next month I tried to see how much I could possibly download. I got up to 170GB before they pulled the plug with no questions asked.

Huh, you must have been on a really busy node, I know someone who works at Shaw and they said that 30GB was their policy.

I'm sure their website was updated with the download limits in actual numbers, but I can't for the life of me find it.

https://secure.shaw.ca/policy/Use-Policy.asp

Found it, but I guess they still say nothing about their regular service limits.

I was. It was in the Sait Rez. So they probably had huge amounts of bandwidth going to that place. At the time their policy had no direct limit, just a soft one which was at their discretion.

Haven't had that issue myself, and as bad as service on the Cable TV end, the Internet support and service is great.
However, for 6 days when I got a new computer (long story, I returned it) I had a horrible time, but it was software related.
Two things that helped fix it.

1) Running Ad-Aware on a full scan. Cleaned out a lot of crap which slowed stuff down big time.

2)Call Shaw service, and tell them that something is wrong with your connection. If tyou get them hey send a signal through to your house/connection, it seems to work. ( I swtiched from lite to high speed when I got the new comp...as soon as they did the change(by them firing something down the connection from their end) it worked like a charm.)

I'm not even going to comment on the Telus DSL that was installed in Dorm rooms my first year at University. To say the least, even though I had DSL running, I found 3web free dialup service was better.

My Telus DSL was absolutely horrible for the first few months I had it. Far worse than my dial up. I complained a few times and they usually just said, you must have a virus. After a few months it suddenly became ok. I suspect they found some equipment problems.

Of course, right at this moment, the 'DSL link' LED on my modem is flashing, it has been sporadic for the past few days.
Shaw that I use at work has been more stable then DSL in my opinion.

I hate watching that stupid link button, hoping it will stay solid. It is nerve wracking.

Sisters boyfriend worked for Shaw up until a couple weeks ago.

He says the limits are around 8gb down, 2 gb up.

Sure that isn't for the Shaw web hosting or something? I've never heard anyone getting a notice for only 8GB.

I asked and he said that often it's not just getting close to or over 30GB/month, it's how much you do per day.. IE if you did 30GB by downloading 24/7 for the first days of the month they might flag that as well.

Yeah my msn keeps going on and off, every time I come home.

I am available to chat, but when I leave I am appearing off line. so it must be losing signals from time to time.
