Default British Airways LHR/YYC 5x Weekly Launched

British Airways is to launch a new service from London Heathrow to Calgary in Canada on December 1, 2006.

There will be five flights each week on a Boeing 777 to the city in the Canadian province of Alberta.

Get ready for more funny talkin' people around here! Great news for us in Calgary, Edmonton was rumored to get a flight too but nothing firm yet. I believe BA 777's are setup for 4 class travel so for the premium travellers it suddenly give them a world of options.

But get this promo deal....
An introductory fare of £299 including taxes for return flights from London Heathrow to Calgary is available until July 19, 2006. After that date, return fares start at £575 including taxes.

Not sure if Canadian residents are eligible for this but that's a heck of a deal!

I'm wondering with that being in pounds, there could be additional taxes on our side of the pond.

Those flights are always chock-full with Brits, I'm not really surprised BA is instituting this service.

Last month I saw a British travel programme here on tv that did a segment on Alberta, since Brokeback Mountain once again revealed to the world our stunning scenery. Anyway the tv programme was a bit of a let down as they devoted as much time to Banff and Lake Louise as they did to Fort MacLeod and some no-name ranch near Pincher Creek. And they didn't even go to Frank Slide while they were down there. They could have done a much better job of selling Alberta for British tourists, although there are plenty enough already.

Look for Edmonton to get a 3X Weekly starting about 1-2 months after the Calgary service. BA is currently converting some of the EU domestic 767 to 3 class service.

I half expected the BA announcement to also be with a 3 class 767 as I cant see the number of F class PAX being that large. It might be that the 18J seats arent enough for YYC though? Also look for the seasonal second daily to YVR to be cancelled.

This coupled with the Cathay comments a few months ago lead me to believe that WestJet might become an associate member of Oneworld. With Cathay, BA, Quantas, that would allow Westjet to perhaps restart the YYZ-LAX route and possible start YUL, YEG, YWG to LAX as well.

Of all the alliances, that is the one that fits perfectly.

I have also heard rumors of Westjet now going with Ejets as they are displeased with how the 600's keep bulking out.
