Name my new company
Hi all!
As you may have read in my other recent post, I'm starting a company. Specifically, the company will specialize in creating an identity and branding for a business: logos, the look of all documents (headed notepaper, business cards, fliers, etc.), promo videos, music (jingles, etc.), as well as their online presence (website, newsletters, etc.).
However, my partner and I are struggling to come up with a decent name. can you help? smile.gif
Here's some requirements to guide you!
- It needs to be pretty short
- It can be a made-up word or words (i.e. by compounding two words together to make one new word)
- The '.com' domain name must be available (though I can check this if you don't know how)
So, go to it!
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Cam

Is there a prize??? lol.
Here goes:
1. First and Lasting Impressions
(I basically thought of what your business will really be involved in, and that is creating a good first impression for your clients, and preferrably one that will stick in the head of their customers. Also I think it refers well to the scope of your business, in that you will do all of the things needed to create that impression. Hope it isn't too long.)
2. RRR (Redesign, Rethink, Revolutionize)
I'll try to think of some others.

So you are starting a business that will live and die on your own personal creativity.
And you can't even come up with a name for your own business.
Good luck.

I don't think that it is necessary to say something like that. First of all, coming up with a name isn't an easy thing, especially for a company. all he wanted was a suggestion, nothing more. Sure, this business will live and die on their personal creativity, but to create a website, logo is a lot easier than coming up with a name.
I was thinking of something like a design studio type of thing... not that its a studio or anything but it sounds kinda cool... I know its not short... but will be kinda easy to remember... something like Raven design studio...

What about a combination of your names. Or just simply your last name and design. Scotty Design. You know?

well, i dont think he was being an a-hole. it was the very first thing that came to my mind as well.
sounds like he is going into the creative industry and cant even come up with his own name?
look, part of my job is evaluating vendors like this for our company, so i think i am qualified to speak. why would i hire a person to create my company image and brand when he is struggling to do it for his own company? imagine, he knows his vision better than anyone and he cant get it from brain to paper so to speak, how is he going to do that for a client? and in the niche he is in, he could very well be asked to rebrand a company, including its name.
just saying

Well the one flaw in your scenario is that by the time his proposal got to you, he'd have a name for his company. Right? He hasn't even started. I'm a designer with tons of experience and I could never name my own company. I'd be so original I'd use "Jeff's Designs". Ask me to design packaging for something, and well, I'll kick ass, but name my own company? Forget it.

Wow. Some real jerks in this thread. Naming companies is a very hard thing and naming your own company is even harder.
Personally I like empty vessel names - ones that don't have some specific association to the service being offered but just is cool sounding and will stand out. In the creative industry it can work particularly well.
Something like:
Big Red Pen
The Plot Thickens Creative
I dunno. Those are probably poor examples. But the point is it can be anything which allows you to stretch your creative muscle. Could be the name of a childhood pet, your wife's initials, or just a couple of words that sound cool together.
A name doesn't necessarily have to say what you are going to be doing...its your job to attach that meaning to the name. So think beyond the normal names that simply say what you do.
Good luck with the business dude!

I tried that once. My name is Phil, my partner's name is Chuck. We didn't even notice what it sounded like until we talked to the domain registry guy.

Play on illumination, imagination.
It's pretty short. And as far as register.com is concerned, it is available.

Here you go: Boomtown Brand or Boomtown Branding.
Both ".com"s are available. Where can I send my bill and/or resume?

Come on though, the question is at least kind of funny isn't it?
Not funny as in 'you are dumb' but the kind of funny whereby you would rib a friend for asking?
for example, if I knew Scottie well enough I might say: 'I don't have any ideas, but maybe you could call up one of the corporate identity type companys'
I am kind of impressed that he asked on here. Good on you.
