Hotel recommendations in Calgary
I have only been to Calgary once and that was some years back.
Trying to plan a semi-last minute weekend trip from 7/14-7/17.
However, as you all know the Stampede is in town and Hotel prices are astronomical ($150 per night and up).
In any event I am pretty bummed because I can't justify spending $1000 for a last minute weekend jaunt.
For the future where is a decent Hotel to stay in that is close to downtown? Is there some type of subway action? From what I have read the AP is about 10 miles outside of downtown, is this right?
Just wondering if you all wouldn't mind recommending something. Looking on the internet isn't as accurate as asking the locals

Motel Village has about 50 Motels and Hotels...its on Crowchild Trail NW and has LRT or Light Rail Transit right behind it. You can get anywhere from there.
Type motel village, calgary in google and youll find a bunch of listings.

Yeah, the AP is pretty far from the DT. You can't get to Downtown from the airport by train, though.
If you want to stick to the train as your mode of transport, you'll be pretty limited in terms of what hotels you can stay at.
I'd imagine that a room downtown will be impossible to find at a decent rate by now.
Your best bet might be what's known as the Motel Village that is up by the University.

It is right by Banff trail station and has a little pack of 4 or 5 motels in it.
Then again, if you want to be close to the action, you might want to check out The Carriage House Inn on McLeod which is very close to Ranchmans, and isn't a bad cab ride, bus or walk from with Heritage or Southland Train Stations...

Yeah, but then you would have had to spend 3 days in Vancouver.
I did some looking at what I thought were out of the way hotels, but along the C Train line, but they were still ~$175 per night.
Maybe try an outlying city like Okotoks, Airdrie, or Okotoks. I would think you could get a Greyhound ticket into town for a lot less than the difference in hotel costs.
Or as silly as it may be, Fotze's suggestion of the Cecil might just be in your price range. Just be forwarned though. When the ask you if you pee'd in the ice machine; it's a trick question. If you say no, you'll be told "Then it's your turn."

Hey thanks for the suggestions Gents. Looks like I am not going to be able to afford this one.
Should probably save my green for a Flames game anyway!

Its Stampede week where every horny guy / chick in the city is on the prowl.
Just hook up with one and save your hotel money for the bars.
Cause you'll need it.

I'm going to have to recommend the Cecil and the St. Louis hotels as prime accomodations for the Stampede. Close to the Grounds, relatively inexpensive, and located in a dynamic neighborhood with lots to see (especially at night).
However, I do recommend setting your room on fire first before you touch anything...

I would look into possibly staying in residence at the University. The residences are close to the C-train line but probably much cheaper than the closer motels.

The Econolodge I stayed in at Motel Village on 16th ave a few weeks ago said they still have rooms available for stampede. Room was $120 with a small kitchen w/appliances.
As well, check out the SAIT residences. Will probably be nicer than UofC (newer). Very nice rooms, with living room and kitchen. Can be had for cheap. They have internet access as well. Within walking distance to shopping and the C-Train and just north of downtown. Rate is about $50 /night andbeats any hotel I've stayed in.

Yeah, just avoid waking up in a field outside of Gleischen with no shoes, no shirt, the sun shining in your eyes and a dog licking your face wondering where the hell am I and worse who am I.
