Default Dishwasher Strange Part!?! Help hive mind!!

We had a Miele dishwasher that grenaded this weekend. As I was replacing it I noticed hundreds/thousands of really tiny little spherical balls. I thought nothing of it until today. When we dropped it loaded into the car today, there were thousands of these little balls, the size of a grain of sand.

No idea what they hell they are, but there everywhere. Anyone know what they're from?? I'm thinking its a packing of some sort for a pump bearing but have no idea.

I'll try and take a pic, but they're golden in colour and tiny.

Thanks Wormius, I think you're right, its the resin from the water softening unit. When you add the salt (sodium) it recharges the resin letting the hardness (calcium and magnesium) get adsorbed and the sodium replaces the hardness in the water.

How the hell did I not think of this (part of my job, softening water for a chemical EOR flood)!!!
