Default NFL: Ben Roethlisberger Motorcycle Accident

According to reports from Pittsburgh Ben Roethlisberger has been seriously injured in a motorcycle accident...I can't find a news link for the story, however there is a thread on the Steelers forum about it.

no helmet and hit his head on a windshield. WTF is wrong with people who refuse to wear a lid while riding a motorcycle?

Hmmm...I remember after Kellen Winslow had his motrocycle accident last year, Bill Cowher came out and said he wasn't a fan of Big Ben riding his bike. Guess you should listen to your coach.

They has a story on one of the pre-game shows specifically about this last season.

They spoke to Cowher, and Ben about riding without a helmet.

Edit: SI has picked up the story. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html

The lengths to which people will go to look cool always amazes me. The guy jumping that gap in Lethbridge, and now Big Ben ruining his NFL career right before he was going to cash in. Good job bone err mush head.

I beleive it is also written into their contracts that you cannot ride Motorcycles.

Very stupid indeed.

Anyone else surprised this hasn't been picked up by ESPN or TSN yet? Seems like major news...but nothing.

I think some guys have that in their contracts, but I doubt it's a standard clause.

Both have stories now.

Keep in mind this happened less than 2 hours ago. It's funny how we become so dependant on information on demand. (myself included)

Kellen Winslow's use of a motorcycle might have violated standard NFL contract language that prohibits players from engaging in dangerous activities.

It is standard. Not really specific to Motorcycles, but those are included I beleive on the "Dangerous activities", and you can lose your contract for it.

I read the accident happened at midnight last night.

While I hope the guy is OK, I have no sympathy for this kind of stupidity.

Whole lotta stupid in that accident.

Roethlisberger for not wearing a helmet, and the driver of the other car for turning into the path of oncoming traffic.

Not a motorcyclist myself so I might be a bit biased here. It seems that across all professional sports a disproportionate number of career-ending (or near-ending) injuries are a result of motorcycle accidents. A couple of Duke point guards come to mind (Bobby Hurley and Jay Williams). I know you look cool and everything but even if you take the necessary precautions and wear a helmet, you are far more likely to sustain some serious injury in a crash while riding a motorbike as compared to a car in a similar accident.

And they say there are two kinds of motorcyle riders out there: guys that have laid their bikes down and guys who are going to lay their bikes down. Seems like such a huge risk with relatively little reward...

Nonetheless, I liked Big Ben and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Sprots Law Blog comments on the accident. For more info on the "dangerous activities" clause, I would monitor that blog as it's usually right on top of things. And pretty interesting to boot.

Both ESPN and KDKA say 11:30 am; which I'm assuming is Eastern Time.

I just hope the guy who hit him doesn't get sued for everything he owns; when the damage could have been mitigated (sp?) by Ben wearing a helmet.

Fair enough.
I had no idea there was a standard "Dangerous activities" clause.
I suppose it makes good sense, but I never would have guessed that it was standard.
Live and learn.

unconfirmed reports say he broke his sinus cavity, his jaw and injured his knees when he hit the pavement. He's in or has had surgery already. Still no concrete reports on the helmet issue.
