open letter to Dave Bronconnier.....
Dave,
I've been living in this fine city for just over a decade. I love the fact that we're close to the mountains. We've got great sports facilities, and I know you're working on this whole infrastructure thing. We're in a booming economy, everything is grand. So why on earth are we seemingly the last major city in Canada to go non-smoking in public indoor places? Even Quebec is now non smoking!!!! Get on the ball, Calgary.
Thanks!
Habby

Dave. You are the worst mayor Calgary has ever had. Please leave.
Does anyone have that pic of him and Chretien shaking hands?

Seriously agree, I wrote my alderman like 2 years ago and asked what the heck they we're doing with this 2008 thing. He said we've already made a commitment to our business community and we want to honor that. Needless to say i'm not voting for Dale Hodges again. (not to mention the recent tax hike that he supported)

Make sure you speak with your wallet. Start going to places that are non-smoking.
For bar/pub type places I go to:
Limericks (lower floor is non-smoking)
BP's in Oakridge (passing 2 other BP's to get there.)
Tipperary (sp?) on 16 ave & 19 st NW.
I also think the Keg's lounge is non smoking; it is open to the restaurant side.

We're way behind with the non-smokign thing, it's embarrassing.
Sometimes there are bands playing at the Back Alley I want to see, I literally walk up to the door and ask EXACTLY when they will be on stage. Then proceed to wait outside until a few mins before they're on, and then leave while the last chords are still ringing, just can't stand the smoke.
And that's a big room with a high ceiling, the smaller clubs are ever worse. Never go to those.

They've been testing it on a select group for quite a while. Then debating results and going back and doing it again and debating yawwwwn.
Its a plastic bin, in front of your house or development, that dudes with gloves pic up and dump in a truck how hard can it be!?
I hear they're going to not include "multi family residences" either. Only single family dwellnigs, i.e. houses.
Sorry for off topic rant.

Bronconnier is highly respected as one of Canada's top big city mayor's. He is a leader, unlike many mayors who pander to special interests and are concerned only with their own re-election. Be happy you have him and not some of the weaklings that Edmonton has had (and still has).
But habernac, you are right on with the smoking bylaw. I can't believe how far behind Calgary is on that issue.

We get curb side recycling pickup. My better half got in touch a year ago and arranged for it. We pay a very minor amount every year for it, works pretty well and cuts down a bunch on the crap going to the landfill.

There used to be a bar on 10th or 11th that was non-smoking. Way out of the way (poor location) but my wife and I would make the trip every so often when we wanted to go out. One day it was closed and some other bar was there. So we left.
Nicks on Crowchild accross from McMahon converted their bar into more of the restaurant, so no more smoking in there (yippee). I'll be stopping in there for more post-slo-pitch beer than in previous years.

You should see Greece. Everyone smokes all the time, everywhere. On the plane, at the bank, etc. It will be a long time before Europe is non-smoking.
