If his story is true, that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I hope the Customs agent gets fired.

I gotta say that 999/1000 times stories like this about incidents with Customs or Immigration officials are completely bunk. The spokesperson isn't allowed to comment publicly on the reason for the person being refused entry so stories like that go unchallenged in the media.

It's only bad press because the dude is making crap up and/or completely misunderstood the reasons for his not being allowed into Canada plus the fact that the media doesn't understand how this works plus the fact that privacy laws in place to protect his privacy prevent the CBSA from actually setting the record straight.
I agree that it's frustrating for our city and our country to be linked to this kind of bad press. If it's any consolation, you can rest easy knowing that what this guy alleges is complete carp.

"If it's any consolation", our customs and immigration are not representative of all Canadians. In my experience I've encountered some of the dumbest goofs in my life at our borders and I believe what this N. Irishman says is very believable.

I have met some customs goofs too. America and Canada. America seems to be worse as everytime I drive across the boarder they ask me If I am trafficing marijuana.

Because by taking my word, you don't have to believe the ridiculousness of this guy's story. Shaky hands = deportation, huh? Must have missed that section in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
I'm not saying weird stuff doesn't happen at border crossings in Canada or that the officers there are infallible. There are loose cannons in any industry that give the rest of the workers a bad name. The supervisors at the Calgary airport are top-notch and wouldn't let something like this happen, at least not the way the Irish guy says.
But I have my reasons for disbelieving the dude. Call it intuition. Call it a hunch. Call it personal experience. Just keep your ears open for follow up with this story.

When we lived in NB we crossed over into Maine a few times. Going through to the US their border guards always gave me a tough time. Coming back into Canada was no problem. One time going into the US, he asked me the same questions over and over. It was also winter, so then he asked me what I had in my trunk so I told him a shovel and a blanket. he didn't seem too impressed by this answer so he ordered me to open the trunk and sure enough that's what he found.

I know haha, why do American's think that. When I lived in the states they showed those commercials on tv. Anything to make terrorism a bigger problem then it alrady is. Gotta keep feeding the war machine.

They do that to make sure your story stays consistent (repeating questions).

I've noticed that Canadian customs often seems to hire students to work the borders between Seattle and Vancouver in the summer. Half the time I'm coming back from the states in the summer they haven't even asked me to see identification.
I've sure never had that going into the states. Doesn't stand too well for our side of protecting the border.

The fact that you believe that crap the Irishman says makes me believe if what your saying is truly how you feel, then by your standards you should be working for customs.

Here's why I tend to be skeptical. Under privacy laws; Canada Customs cannot say anything about the case without his permission. As far as I know; he has not given it yet. In the news last week they said that he was planning on giving his permission this week.
Why not give permission while all of those cameras are on you?
I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those issues where CCRA could have handled the situation better; but the person is not quite as innocent as he is claiming. Keep in mind all I'm basing the previous statement on is my gut.

Believe it or not there are still some people who hold a dislike for us Irishmen. It wasn't that long ago when signs outside of British Pubs said "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs". I wouldn't put it past customs to be a little leary of a shaky irishmen because 9/10 it probably would have been because of drugs......
