Minnesota (AP) - Brendan Shanahan's power-play goal with 1:22 remaining lifted the Atlanta Thrashers to a 6-5 victory Thursday night over the Minnesota Wild and forced a Game 7 in their CPHL Finals.
Thrashers Garth Snow who took over from injured Patrick Lalime earlier in the playoffs, stopped 14 shots, in an off night for the goalie who could be. Minnesota's Curtis Joseph faced 42 shots. The final game of the series is Friday night in Atlanta.
Shanahan picked up a loose puck, sliced to his left behind the net, then slid the puck toward the crease, where it hit Steve Paopst and skittered past Joseph and into the net.
The goal was Shanahan's tenth of the playoffs.
Just minutes before that goal, Minnesota's Paopst had tied it 5-5 with a short handed goal on the same penalty. Skating into the left circle, Paopst took a pass from Kristian Huselius and beat Snow with a slap shot to the stick side.
The game was an intense affair with the lead changing or being tied 5 times before Shanahan's late heroics.
Notes: After 10 pre season games, 86 Regular season games its down to one....one game for the trophy. The Wild will have played 27 playoff games by the time the final is done, the Thrashers 22. Whatever is left in the gas tank must be used, all stops must be taken to ensure that the victor has no excuses.
Game 7 tomorrow......
