Who Misses Global Sports?
I grew up watching Ed Whalen, Grant Pollock, Mike Lonsborough, Mike Toth etc on Sports at 11 and I wish it were back (minus Ron Manz). I really miss the local coverage this time of year when the Stamps are in Training Camp. I don't get the chance to read the newspaper everyday and I wish I had the inside scoop on the Stamps, The human interest stories that we may not be aware of, the who to look for... yada, yada, yada.
Hockey season wasn't so bad because of CalgaryPuck and TSN/Sportsnet/The Score etc. The NHL gets plenty of coverage
But the Stamps,Vipers, the Stampede, Roughnecks, etc. They just can't get the indepth coverage in 9 mins that used to take up a half hour show.
Anybody else miss the extended show.
PS get better Joe Sports

What local sports needs to realize is that they need to provide something differen than the networks (TSN, etc).
Part of that is covering the local amateur and other pro sports like the Vipers, college sports, etc.
But a bigger part of it should be going deeper into the local pro teams like the Flames. The local stations do this with the Stamps but when it comes to the Flames - where are you going to watch to get a good story? Probably not Global or CTV. And there's no reason for that. As the local broadcaster they should be able to go even deeper.
Show me something I don't get anywhere else and I'll watch.

Jiri, I completely agree and I guess thats why they got cancelled. Show the clips of the games thats fine, but you can see those on 7 other stations about every 15 seconds. I really liked back in the day with the human interest stories, the behind the scenes stuff. I got a couple of Flames PPV games this year. They (were not worth the money) but I liked them because it reminded me of a 2&7 broadcast with Grant and Ed. Every second period they would have a feature on one of the players or coaches or a Bobby Smith or Bearcat Murray. You really felt part of the Flames watching those broadcast not just the NHL at large.
I still think if Global came back and did intense behind the scenes features it would work. I'm sick of the Torontocentric TSN and the BCcentric Sportsnet. I think it might work. I'll host it!!!

I think he has a form a leukemia.
One thing I remember about the old Sports @ 11 show was the great chemistry the guys had with eachother. I'd almost prefer a more talk-show type format specifically regarding local sports. Something more like Off The Record than Pardon The Interruption.
We kind of get that already with the Fan 960, but its at most a three-person panel. I'd like more people involved.
On an unrelated note, do the commercials promoting Mike Richards in the morning kind of sound odd to anyone else? They're very sycophantic. "What do we like about Mike Richards? That he's so cool! By the way, he's really cool! And, you know, cool and stuff!"

You're right, I agree. The commercials are just over-the-top, I guess.

That's what I miss about Global not being on. Remember Monday night "Sports Pits". They would have Spoletini, Dowbiggen, Petrie, Jim Barker or whomever on and talk local sports for a half hour. I basically have no info on the Stamps Training camp if I don't go to GOSTAMPSGO.com

Global Sports was great but unfortuantely it's the times, Global TV is just a chain across the nation giving the same garbage to every city. Last year all Global channels turfed the local sports program coast to coast cause the top guns want more news less sports. I guess there's not enough of it or there's more money to be made broadcasting more of it. Either way it's the local teams and fans that end up losing out, which is too bad. Hopefully channels like Sportsnet will add more programs like CFL programming to fill the void.
