Default Attn: 4 eyes! Warning about B&L ReNu Contact Solution!

Just a CP Public Service announcement. I'm sure more than a few of us wear contacts.... a notable recall was issued recently.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that public health officials in 17 states were investigating 109 cases of Fusarium keratitis, a rare fungal infection that damages the cornea.

Eight patients had to undergo corneal transplants.
After that announcement, Bausch & Lomb suspended all U.S. shipments of its ReNu with MoistureLoc lens-care solution made at its plant in Greenville, South Carolina, but did not recommend its use be stopped.

Yikes, I used this stuff before. What makes matters worse is that CIBA has also had production problems taking SoloCare, Clear Care, and a few other brands off the market. There's not much else left!

I saw this the other day, then the consuer report on Global(Tony Tighe) said that it is Renu with MoistureLoc which isn't sold in Canada (I use Renu, but my bottle says Multiplu No-Rub)

link

Quote:
VAUGHAN, ON, April 11 /CNW/ - Bausch & Lomb Canada Inc. said today the
suspension in shipments of a U.S. made contact lens solution ReNu(R) with
MoistureLoc(R), does not affect its Canadian customers as that product is not
sold in Canada.
But I'm sure the Yankee members of CP should take heed.

Crap, I use that stuff...

But seeing as though I've been using the current bottle for 6 weeks, I might have noticed such a problem by now.

Interesting that you mention this. I use Clear Care and ran out several weeks ago, but could not find it anywhere. Not a single pharmacist could tell me what was happening, just that it was on backorder so I had to switch brands. Any links to info on what happened or if its coming back, discontinued etc?

Sounds like a mess in Toronto.....
Duluth-based CIBA Vision says it has begun shipping the products again, after a hiatus of more than two months.

The company discovered at the end of 2005 that a "nonsterile lubricant" had been used on machinery at a plant in Toronto.

The company said no contaminated products left the plant.

"As a precautionary measure, we suspended production," said Laurie Sillay Lahr, spokeswoman for CIBA Vision. "Everything that had already left the plant was safe. It was just a precautionary measure on our part, not a product recall."

The plant was up and running again at the beginning of this year, she said, but it has taken CIBA Vision a couple of months to build up supply of Clear Care and AQuify MPS, another cleaning solution affected.

"We just started shipping to retail stores a few weeks ago, and the products have already started showing up on shelves," Sillay Lahr said. "We regret any inconvenience that this has caused to consumers, but the good news is that they'll start seeing an increase in supply over the next few months."

CIBA Vision, which is owned by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis and has a large contact lens plant in Duluth, declined to say how much of an impact its Toronto shutdown had on sales.
Big discussion here: http://www.visioncareforums.com/show...messageid=7326

I got word from my optometrist in Feb 06 that they had this "problem" and to stockpile, so I grabbed 4 bottles from a WalMart. Wish I had more, running out, although it sounds like they might be shipping new stuff soon.

What a mess...

My Optometrist stocks AMO products (http://www.amo-inc.com/site/) they seem good. Might be an option for you.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it is slowly coming back to stores in the States, hopefully here soon as well. Once my Optometrist turned me onto Clear Care there has been no going back. The peroxide-based solution is simple and easy to use and I've never had cleaner, more comfortable lenses. The surfactant and enzyme based solutions irritate my eyes. I've been using Opti-free in the meantime, but have to rinse the lenses thoroughly with saline before I can wear them.

FF, I see AMO has a peroxide-based UltraCare. I might try it out if ClearCare doesn't come back to the shelves soon

It should be comming back into stores soon, because I use it to for the same problem. My Eye place is getting their sample size ones in, and I think i have 4 or 5 bottles that ive got from them on seperate occasions over the past 2 weeks. If you still cant find it in the stores go to your Optometrist because they should have it back by now.

I've used contacts but can't stand them. They make my eyes all sleepy/heavy and are a pain in the ass to put in. Plus I have astigmatism which doesn't help.
