660News radio starts up
No more oldies on 66CFR as of this morning. Guess Rogers is going to give QR77 a run for the money in the newser category. As a sister station to Fan960, could be some cross-over programming.

And Kevin Usselman stays employed.

RIP Calgary Fun Radio, Calgary Family Radio, Calgary Flames Radio (during the dark times).
I haven't listened to CFR since the Flames went to the Fan, and the last time I was a regular listener, the morning show was Jerry Steen and the Steen Team.
It's just another end of an era in Calgary radio. I think they've basically had the same format since they signed on in the early 80s, something no other Calgary AM station can say (except the CBC).
I guess 1060 is the only station still playing music on the AM dial.

I listened to it a bit. Great if you want to catch the news at anytime of the day. I don't know if they are doing any actual talk radio or just news every hour. I suspect Usselman is stll with the Fan as it would seem they have some sort of agreement with them. When I was listening Dave Rowe was on also from the "Fan 960 Sports Room".
The afternoon guy must have been from down east as he called Calgary "Halifax" a couple of times. Funny stuff.
I'm a talk radio junky as well so its a welcome change from oldies.

Even they have talk radio for part of their evening programming.
1140 also plays music at times.

Yeah thats what it seems like right now too. I dont think it is going to last if that is the case. I couldnt imagine sitting through the same news reports every half hour or whatever it will be. Also, they are doing weather and traffic one the ones. Even this late at night. Hearing traffic reports every 10 minutes during rush hour on QR is tedious, I dont think I will be subjecting myself to the same thing all day long.
LOL Here is the traffic report from just now
"So Patrick, hows it lookin out there right now?"
"Well, it's pretty clear. It is almost midnight."
Heh, good stuff.

With the Herald raising their prices to a buck a day and $ 1.50 on the weekend I will renew my faith in free radio.
I have to find a pushbutton inthehouse radio because I always am tuned to 960. Get a life shoe.

City's radio market tuned for shakeup
It's been 104 years since Marconi bounced his famous radio transmission from Wales to Newfoundland, and since that time, the radio industry has rarely been in a more interesting position than it is now.

Station to Station: Newcomers compete for a prized place on Calgary dial
Cases have been made and plans laid. Significant neglected demographics have been targeted, from the hip, college crowd that prefers cerebral art-pop bands such as Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene to mainstream muscle-rock by the likes of Nickelback and Hoobastank.

I listened to this station for about 45 minutes this morning and it was pretty, umm, frantic. It was like they had 10 people running in and out of the room saying different things and the traffic lady is practicing her auctioneering skills.

CFR was voice of the Flames for both Final runs in the eighties, so they weren't all dark days. As I recall, QR (they were 81 on the AM dial in those days) was the original Flames' broadcaster back in 1980.

I'm pretty sure the '86 and '89 Cups were on QR 77.
As for News 660, it seems to be a very popular format in Toronto (News 680) so it might have some legs in Calgary.

Vancouver has had the same station for at least a couple years. I always listen to it when I'm out there. I like the constant flow of info they provide. It seems though that it may be more tailored for a larger market. I'm just not sure there is enough changing news, traffic, etc. around the clock in Calgary as there is in Vancouver or TO. I do like the format though and hope it works here.
Edit: the Vancouver version is just as you hear on 660. No talk radio, all news, weather, sports, market reports, etc.

Seems that this format would cost all of $3.95 a year to run, thus it isnt a bad gamble.
I wonder if they finally changed formats after their old music records finally wore right through?

No, QR was the home of the Flames from their arrival until the early 90s. All of the Flames best days were on QR...and now The Fan.

So long 66CFR. May your legacy live on in the form of "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" being played at every Flames home game in the Saddledome.
