Default Love where I live, but this "kind" of story is too common

This is a beautiful area and a great little city I am in. However, there has been some BIZARRE stuff the last few years.

This may top em all.

I challenge anyone to get through that article without clutching the goods or having some other weird physical reaction to what you are reading. I don't think it can be done.

Hey Transplant.. too common? you mean there are other stories that compare to this, or are up there on the creepy scale?

Wow it would be easy being a journalist in that town, the stories would write themselves.

Just replaying the scene from Pulp Fiction in my head, even though it's not an exact parallel.

There have been a number of things that fall into the "bizzarro" side of things in this area for sure.

Though I am in a city....we are surrounded by hills/mountains (the Appalaichan is the area, Blue Ridge/Smoky Mountains) and as hard as it is to believe in this day and age....hillbillies (for lack of a better term) still exist to some extent. By no means are they a majority of the population or even much more than a handful for that matter, but there are areas that have severe problems with education/incest etc etc.

Case in point.. a couple years ago there was a story that had police called to a farm house out in the hills. When they arrived they found something like 12 dogs, and as many pigs and cats etc living in the house. Apparently the owners had brought in all their animals during an unusually cold stretch of weather to save them from freezing.

The story read like a freakin horror movie...6" thick of animal feces on the floors etc etc.

When asked what happened, the owners said they brought the animals in and things "just got away" from them.

Too many incidents of incest to relate here as well (my wife worked for legal services for 20 years and the stories astound)...and just plain goofy stuff that the more civilized parts of the US and Canada simply couldnt fathom. Like i said, its a unique part of the world.

I'm not sure which is worse; that this happens or the fact that there is a specific charge called "felony castration."

In other words this happens so often that the law makers got together and said "we need a law specifically for this type of thing."

Having lived in the Appalachian area of South Eastern Kentucky for a number of years, I understand what you are taking about. I lived there in a small city (based soley on population, otherwise I don't think you could consider it a city). There are just a lot of problems with that sort of thing. Although, I don't really recall anything as bad as in the article but I didn't really pay attention to it either.

Hillbilly is a good word to describe a number of the people in the area. Not everybody but there are still quite a lot like that. Same sort of problems with education, incest, drugs and the like. Some of the businesses they have brought in to the place I lived left due to these problems.

I'm glad to be out of there.
