I was once called to reception because one program wouldn't work on one machine. I asked what had happened and was, of course, told nothing changed, it just stopped working. So after 45 minutes and having a bunch of other things to get to, I said, she would have to do without it, I'd try again tomorrow. Then I got the sheepish "Here's what I was trying to do..." and it took me about a minute after that to fix it. That was in the Win3.1 with Netware days.
And I have a machine with FC3 running MythTV. Of course I screwed something up royally the other night. Now the GLX extension of the nVidia drivers won't work. Fixing that will be one of my weekend tasks!
