Default It's L-i-n-u-x, that is an Operating System...

Having a quiet Friday catching up with The Register and came across this classic I have to share.

Quote:
The heartland turned vicious this week when an Oklahoma town threatened to call in the FBI because its web site was hacked by Linux maker Cent OS. Problem is CentOS didn't hack Tuttle's web site at all. The city's hosting provider had simply botched a web server.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/03/24/tuttle_centos/

The best read is the actual emails back and forth from the patient CentOS guy to the dimwitted Tuttle City Manager.

I would suggest not drinking anything as you read unless you'd like some new hardware. There are also a few updates on The Register as the story continued for a few days.

I thinnk everyone who does any tech support has been told buy someone "I know what I am doing" even thought they don't have a clue.

BTW - are there any Linux fans in the crowd here?

The best part about it is the "I have 22 years experience" and "I'm going to call the FBI." If Jerry whould have actually read and thought about what he was being asked for he would have not been the butt of an international tech joke.

If I was on the Tuttle council I'd fire his butt...although...if I was on the Tuttle council I'd probably be lucky to know there is "the internets" out there.

I did tech support for a bunch of engineers once. What a gong show. An extreme case of "I know what I'm doing"-itis. Those guys just can't help themselves from messing around. But just try to get them to admit that it's broken because of something that they did...

Linux rocks. I'm an Ubuntu fan. Although I prefer to run FreeBSD on my servers when possible.

I was once called to reception because one program wouldn't work on one machine. I asked what had happened and was, of course, told nothing changed, it just stopped working. So after 45 minutes and having a bunch of other things to get to, I said, she would have to do without it, I'd try again tomorrow. Then I got the sheepish "Here's what I was trying to do..." and it took me about a minute after that to fix it. That was in the Win3.1 with Netware days.

And I have a machine with FC3 running MythTV. Of course I screwed something up royally the other night. Now the GLX extension of the nVidia drivers won't work. Fixing that will be one of my weekend tasks!
