Default Cross Country Skiing

I'm thinking about taking up cross country skiing and don't know too much about it. I've tried cross country skiing a few times before but that was years ago. It seems like there are 2 types of skis. Classic and Skating. Is it possible to ski both ways (traditional and skating) on one type of ski? I'm considering getting some skis in the next 2 weeks and going out the long weekend in April. What ski hills around here have cross country ski trails? Any other tips are appreciated. Thanks!

I've done a fair bit of Cross Country (not for a while though), the ski resorts usually aren't the best for X country.

Morraine Lake, Lake Minnawonka (sp), Lake Louise, and areas around there have a lot of Cross country trails.

As for Skating/Classic, yes it is possible to do both way at the same time, just get the right type of skis. I remember as a kid skating (although not too effectively) with Classic X country skis. Your best place for advice is to go to some of those stores who sell the equipment and ask them for advice, they can give you good trail guides.

Also, if you have children, don't force them to go X country skiing with you, you can scar them for life as my parents did, and I have absolutely no desire ever to go X country again.

You can ski on Shag golf course when there's snow....

I'va also seen tracks at Fernie and Kimberley, and I also think you can use the Nordic center in Canmore.

If you're looking for night skiing I hear the bars downtown do it a lot.....
