Same reasons why most Canadians hate Celine Dion, Rush and Avril Lavigne, they suck.
Too commercial, over rated and over played.

I've said this before regarding Nickleback. They are the Def Leppard of the 21st Century. If you like the three songs they play then that's cool because they'll play them over and over in different variations all night long.

They get too much exposure.
If I notice I like one of their songs, I could probably find four more that they've recorded that sound exactly the same, just different lyrics.
The huge firetowers that they put in their stage act are pretty cool, and Chad has that power crotch stance down pat. It's good mullet music to shotgun to, but that's about it.
Same with Def Lep! Hahaha. Good times.

I actually don't mind Nickelback. Wouldn't call myself a fan either, but certainly don't hate (don't think this is to harsh a word in their cases) them like 95% of the people, I know.
My only theory could be how seemingly common their music is. As Default and Theory of a Deadman are always mocked as sounding very similar to Nickelback (which they kind of do). Maybe people people are just fed up with hearing the same thing over and over (although Simple Plan are popular among the tween crowd, and they are much worse offenders).
Most people seemed to like This Is How You Remind Me and then it was downhill from there. Maybe their songs are to alike or something.
To answer your question, I don't know exactly why, but it seems harsh.

I love when people dis a band for being too popular or too commercial. Like a band is only cool when they're struggling to make ends meet and no one (except maybe you) knows about them. As soon as people start hearing them and they blow up, then they are no longer cool. It's a no win situation for the band, really.

That's a good analogy. I have a buddy who rips on Nickelback all the time but he loves AC/DC. IMO AC/DC was the first Nickelback with worse lyrics.

I think it's perfectly fine to hate the band, but it's completely stupid to critisize people for liking them. If someone likes a certain band, it's because they have their own personal preference.

Nickelback would still be bad if they were struggling. They are just generic, plain and simple. Its nothing personal. Yeah, I guess its good that Alberta boys made it big. But I don't listen to music based on where the musician is from, I listen to it based on quality, originality, creativity. Nickelback exhibit none of these qualities. But that's just my opinion.

What's wrong with Nickleback?
Please keep the glib, smart ass answers to yourself, I really want to know why there is so much hate for the band? A bunch of local boys do good and the animosity toward them is incredible. Why all the distain for this Canadian export?

The problem with the way you put it, is that Nickelback is not a sports team. There shouldn't really need to be some nationalistic reason to support Nickelback. Either you like the music or don't. To me Alberta has nothing to do with it. Are you saying you like them because they're from Alberta, or do you actually like the music?

Two main reasons I dislike them.
1. Use of the same song structure/formula in most of the songs I've head.
2. Lyrics. Just painfully apelike.

It's a style of music that is un-original and takes away from other Canadian artists play-time in Canada.
For stations like CJAY, they get to fill their Canadian Content requirements with the same old songs from Nickleback, Default, The Hip, etc...
I just get frustrated by it because there is so much more Canadian music out there that is REALLY good and a lot of people just don't hear it.
The New Pornographers are a great example of the kind of thing that is slightly being recognized, but pushed under the carpet by Nickleback. For example, Nickleback is leading the Juno nominations, and bands like The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene and Metric get to duke it out in the alternative category.
That's why I dislike them. But the big thing is that they're boring and repetetive.

CJay used to play Nickelback and Creed in heavy rotation, and it soon got to the point that the first couple of bars and I would change the station. I just got sick of them.

I agree with your post, but its pretty unfair to lump the Hip in with Nickelback and Default. The Hip are a great band, and deserve that airtime.

I'm not lumping them in musically...I'm lumping them into the "Canadian Content" that gets played on a lot of radio stations. I'm not a huge Hip fan, but they are good musicians and the music is good. But they are part of the standard Canadian content CD.

I feel Rush is actually underrated..Geddy may sound like a banshee but they write insightful and intelligent songs and have longevity..something Nickleback will never have
