Sad news. He was a remarkable man.

Had the pleasure of sitting with him for beers one sunny afternoon. Told all kinds of astronaut stories and more.

Yup, three shuttle missions and almost 700 hours in space, he also worked as a NASA flight controller for a number of other shuttle missions.

Amazing man who truly lived a full life, a naval combat engineer on a destroyer and even a Captain and Commander in the Canadian Forces.

In the end a true hero for Canadian kids dreaming of being an astronaut.

The only astronaut I've ever met.

When he was an MP, he visited the place I used to work one time and I was asked to follow around and take video of the tour.

Afterward, he spoke to the staff and talked about the importance of getting more scientists and engineers into politics rather than just a bunch of lawyers (there were a lot of engineers in the crowd).

I met him in 1985 when he was still an astronaut. He came across as very humble and quite happy to talk informally with a group of teenagers about his experiences. I've been a fan since then and was disappointed when Trudeau became Liberal party leader instead of him.
