Default Future Olympics in Calgary?

Hey everyone, sort of odd to be posing in the Off-Topic forum for my first
post, but I was just wondering if anyone else thinks Calgary could possibly
get the nod to host the Winter Olympics in the future. It probably wouldn't
happen for a long time since Vancouver is hosting it in 2010... but I think
Calgary would definitly see the spot light once again... 88 was regarded as
one of the most successful olympics ever and its effects are evident even
today. Many of the facilities are still in use by athletes world wide and to this
day the games are still making profit.

Look how long it was between the games in Athens. They don't like to double up when there are so many places who have never hosted the games.

But on the other side of the coin, Lake Placid held the games in 1932 & 1980.

However, I think you are correct. There are enough different places around the world that would like to hold it that I can't see it coming back to CGY anytime soon.

I remember hearing some amount of chatter about the IOC wanting to be more enviro-friendly and looking to maybe tone down the staggering costs of these festivals.

Returning to past Olympic venues that already have the facilities was one option I heard. They won't have to build a bunch of monstrous facilities, roads, athlete's villages, et cetera. That is good for both the environment and the money.

That being said... if the Olympics were to come back to Calgary, the very earliest it would be is maybe 2018 and probably quite a bit later than that. Everything would be 40 or 50 years old and they'd be rebuilding anyway.

Apparently there are issues with the new speed skating oval construction site in Richmond. It's below sea level and is settling, and there is a risk that seismic activity will limit the use of this facility. If there is an earthquake prior to 2010, it might cause the concrete slab to destablize and not meet IOC or ISU standards. The fall back option is to hold speed skating events in Calgary

I think it's possible that the Winter Olympics could return to Calgary however there would probably be some serious rebuilding or renovations of facilities as bids for the games are Olympic/Paralympic combined bids. Because of when a lot of the 1988 Winter Games facilities were designed there would need to be better accessibility for all the venues in order to be approved.

I've heard that the small high jump at COP isn't to Olympic standards anymore. I would imagine that most of the Olympic buildings in the city aren't up to snuff anymore. As much as most would imagine that the facilities wouldn't cost as much for another Olympics, I would have to imagine that the cost to bring it back to Calgary would be on par, if not more (destruction, re-building... oh, and look at the cost of real estate... building a house in Calgary isn't cheap... not sure if there's a connection, but my un educated head seems to think so)

I hate to say it, but I think Edmonton would get an olympics before we do again. Just my opinion.

I'll bet you $10 Calgary won't have the Olympics in 2088.

Also, I believe I heard that Nakiska isn't big enough for the downhill anymore. Anyone know anything on the matter?

Gottabekd, you are better off investing that $10 for 72 years worth of interest, rather than holding onto it to see. Nonetheless, I accept your bet, and I further bet you $100 that we will not both be alive by 2088.

We had ours and I am satisfied. We had one of the last ones before the costs really jumped. I think the Winter Olympics are the sure fire money maker they once were. Van is already way over budget. I would rather see another expo bid before any Olympic one.

If you're talking Winter Olympics, then gottabekd already won the bet. The Olympics goes every 4 years and the winter olympics won't land in 2088.
