Alcatraz is the only thing I can think of that might be cool to check out. But that's about all I know about San Fran. Maybe the Golden Gate Bridge too...

One of my favorite cities in the world:
http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/subcountry_pr...=8&country=USA&
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/n.../san_francisco/
Northern California's glorious Wine Country is a feasible day trip from San Francisco, but an overnight stay will give you a much better taste of the vineyards and circumvent any 'who's gonna drive' conversations. Only about 5% of Californian wine comes from the Wine Country, but it's the quality stuff; plonk ordinaire is churned out by the barrel in the Central Valley. The best time to visit is autumn harvest, when the grapes are on the vine, or in spring, when the hills are brilliant green.
The two valleys, Napa and Sonoma, lie between 60 and 90 minutes' drive north of San Francisco.

I've planned a trip there since they are the only place aeroplan would take me. What is there to do there? Are there wineries nearby? First thing that came up on google was "Queer things to do in San Francisco" and they wonder where they get the reputation.

I was there last year. Loved going to the lookout ABOVE the Golden Gate Bridge near sundown.
Alcatraz for sure.
Rent a car and drive down to Monterrey/Carmel and do 17 Mile Drive, a private highway along the Big Sur coast. Spectacular
Fishermans Wharf area.
Ride a cable car.
Take your rental car and do a "Bullitt" on some of the amazingly steep streets. Safer to drive up than down!!
Eat, eat, eat.
Drive to Sonoma. Drive to Sausolito.
Stuff like that.

I loved my one trip to San Francisco
certainly hit Alcatraz and a few of the local sites
then plan at least one day to the North checking out the Napa valley
and one day to the South checking Monterey/Carmel
hmm I guess basically exactly what cowperson said. 17 Mile drive is incredible

Go to Haight and Ashbury (not sure if I spelled that right?). It was apparently where the whole hippie movement started back in the 60's, and there are some pretty cool shops along the way. Shopworkers are more than willing to teach you how to smuggle bongs across the border as well!
Fishermans wharf is cool, but pricey. Alcatraz is a definite go to, and you can do that straight from Fishermans. There are also a lot of cool shopping outlets you can check out if you wanted to go shopping (North Face, etc). Half Moon bay is pretty neat to see if you want to see gigantic wave surfing, there's a break called "Mavericks" that is nearby that when working, features some of the largest waves ever paddled into. Cool to see if it's going off.
It's a pretty cool city, for sure.

i had one of my best holidays there.
ok, we stayed at the fort mason hostel - dont know if you know about hostels or not, but its $25 a night, and its right on the seaside, look out one window, see the bridge, look out the other, see alcatraz (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!)
go see alcatraz, cross the brigde, lombardi street, and all that
eat along fishermans wharf a few times
go downtown and see their shops and magnificent city hall
go into chinatown and just browse - eat in 'hole in the wall' places - its all good
look at the flowers, birds, etc. they have a tropical climate, and you wouldnt believe the plants, etc. that you dont see here.
ride the cable car from one area to another
go see a giants game at pac bell
live it up, its a great city.
