China has counterfeit everything, this isn't new news. You think they only copy designer fashions, electronics, cars, and DVDs?
There are too many people trying to take advantage of poor and uneducated people and make a buck. And they do it so professionally and sophisticatedly that it's difficult to tell the difference (some even have realistic packaging). The frightening thing is that this can be done on a capitalist/industrial level of scale.
There was counterfeit baby formula that was like just sugar and starch and had no nutritional value and babies were dying. There are sausages that are actually chemically treated rotten meat. There's tofu made from fried gypsum, bogus whisky that is really lethal wood-alcohol (methanol). Dead fish are kept "fresh" in chemical baths or raised in water full of heavy metals. There are vegetables raised with industrial salts and deadly pesticides, etc. Nothing is wasted if you can make it look and smell 'okay', you try to sell it. There are so many fake medicines and drugs, many of them dangerous, fake rabies vaccine that is nothing but saltwater, cod fish oil that's actually motor oil, etc. There's counterfeit clothing that use bleached rat fur, pillows that use bleached medical gauze and cotton for stuffing (serious), and well...just about anything you can think of. The food production capacity of China just can't keep up with the population and these things prey on the poor who don't know better and it's so rampant the government can't stop it.
One factory making fake food from kitchen waste, intestines, and paint was found guilty of bribing the police for a year to avoid inspections.
