Default Medicine may blow you up like a balloon and kill you in 90 minutes

6 human test subjects in a UK medical trial run by a US pharmaceutical firm for a drug developed by a German pharaceutical company suffered what you only expect to see in horror movies. They were probably mostly young healthy students needing money, only getting £2000 for what might amount to a lethal injection - slow painful death. Once injected, they started to blow up. One 28 year old guy's head is 3 times larger than before, his limbs are purple, chances of survival low. The two guys given placebos in the test escaped the grisly fate.

Pretty sensational and scary if this is true. I wonder if an oompa loompa gave them some prototype gum?

Parexel International has apparently released a statement on this:

http://www.parexel.com/news_and_even...gle.asp?id=234

There are still a lot of questions however about how this happened. Drug testing is very serious business and there are strict guidelines to follow. From reading those articles it seems like something is amiss. Assuming proper testing procedures it is highly unlikely that something of this magnitude would occur. The drug is supposed to be an antiinflammatory and it seems to be doing the complete opposite. I'm skeptical until more proof is presented.

I agree that this sounds rather skeptical but who knows. I can't find anything about this drug in the medical literature, although google brings up some hits of questionable validity. I am not familiar with the UK's drug-to-market policies either, and regardless I doubt something like this followed procedure, especially if there were reports of similar side effects in animals.

On the flip side, something like this could happen if you are screwing around with the immune system. Its possible this is like an anaphylactic reaction x 10, which could explain the wide spread swelling and associated organ failures. Ironic that it was supposed to be an anti-inflamatory...

I read an article about this yesterday and found myself wondering why this doesn't happen more often. Maybe it does and it all gets covered up....

Probably because it doesnt happen very often..... cant paint all drug tests with this brush... without drug testing there are likely some posters on this board that would not be here today.

One case causes everything to be blown out of proportion by the media again... Much like the Vioxx/celebrex stuff.

My wife used to work for Parexel, and now works for a drug company.

We were talking about this yesterday, and she wasn't too surprised, and said it happens sometimes. Of course the bizzarre side effects aren't very common though. The study she is working on right now, has had 4 deaths that were attributed to the drug (out of the 13 people in the test). I believe they were people already very sick though. She said sometimes a few people have to die to save thousands.

Ummm, I wasn't painting all drug testing with the same brush. I was just surprised it doesn't happen more often.

No, it was the guy's head that was blown out of proportion.
