Default Western Balkans vacation advice

I'm in the early stages of planning a western balkans (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina and part of northern italy) vacation. It seems like many people around here have done some travelling in this area and I'm looking for some input.

What locations are a must see? What locations should be avoided? What reference material is the most useful (I have Europe on a shoestring right now by Lonely Planet)? Most importantly I'm trying to find a croatian/slovenian/serbian etc. language guide. Are there any recommendations regarding that?

The locations that I definately want to see right now are Lake Bled in Slovenia, Dubrovnik, Split and some of the islands in the adriatic. Looking to do about a month long trip.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a pretty good language book. It goes pretty indepth on grammar. I own this one:

Pimsleur CDs work well for fast learning of basic necessary language:

If you have more time, you can order from these books. I own these ones as well:

Have a good trip, and share the details with me when you get back. I would be very interested.

And if Mango sees this thread, she might be able to help you more. She has been there before.

BTW, I heard Gornji grad in Zagreb is a must see.

Do viđenja!

I've got friends from Bosnia, Croatia and Bulgaria, and had some very good friends who worked in Switzerland for a while.

I've heard the Croatia has some of the nicest beaches in the world...

Enjoy your trip! Take lots of pics and share the scenery
